Steve Armstrong works the crowd during his Pig Gig performance at Vet's Park. Judge Carrie VanDell enjoys the attention.

Steve Armstrong get a hug from his mom (Lenore Ackerman) right after his performance. "He used to be so shy," mom said proudly about her son.

"I sorted through CD's all afternoon," said Steve Armstrong. "Finally, I picked out the Kenny Chesney song," Armstrong smiled. "I guess it was a good choice."

Good choice it was as Armstrong sang Chesney's "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" for his final performance in the 12-week Michigan Challenge (IDOL) Competition.

Armstrong strolled the big stage at the Vet's Park PIG GIG like he owned it, flashing smile after smile after smile. Armstrong pointed to fans in the crowd like he'd had a beer with every one of them.

During his performance, Armstrong interacted playfully with Judge Carrie VanDell. He was everywhere. His smile and his voice filled the late afternoon air. It's hard to see how he can fit all that activity inside a 3-minute performance.

And in the end, it was no doubt this easy-mannered, yet carefully choreographed stage mastery that earned Armstrong the Michigan Challenge Title.

"Oh yeah, I'm relieved," said Armstrong after the competition. And Armstrong admitted that he was eager to perform on Sunday as a lead-in act for Mark Wills.

"Heck," Armstrong said, smiling that now-familiar Armstrong smile, "I'm ready to get back up on that stage right now.

When his name was announced, Armstrong accepted hugs and hand-shakes onstage from a fierce set of four other competitors.

Armstrong, along with John Cudworth, Kate Gembrowski, Jenna Moeggenborg and Kalei Souza had outlasted 90 performers over 12 weeks of competition at the Stables to earn the five spots in the finals at the Vet's Park Pig Gig.

Each of the five finalists performed at the top of their game.

The long-haired Cudworth rocked, Gembrowski danced and sang, Moeggenborg held the crowd in the palm of her hand and Souza sang like an angel. But it was Steve "Dollar Bill" Armstrong that walked away with top honors.

For his effort, Armstrong receives an all-expense paid trip to Las Vegas and a chance to perform again Sunday at Pig Gig.

"Maybe they'll let me play my own guitar on Sunday," Armstrong smiled.

They just might . . .
