The 2007 football season starts with the proverbial bang this Thursday night for area high schools.

Graff Chevrolet high school correspondents will be on the field for the first time, snapping pictures for our weekly . . .

The first training session for neophyte gridiron photogs is slated for 1 p.m. Thursday in the MyBayCity.com offices at 509 Center Ave. Students wishing to apply for a position should contact Publisher O.J. Cunningham at 892-8501 - E-mail O.J. Cunningham

First out of the chute is Central's always growling Wolves -- hosting ever dangerous Saginaw High's Trojans in the friendly walls of historic Engel Stadium at 7 p.m. Thursday night.

Wolfpack backers hope that Central's fleet Trenton Robinson (4.3 in the 40 yard dash) will outpace Saginaw's speedsters as he prepares for a glowing final season before becoming a Michigan State Spartan next year.

Friday night's local action is topped by a key opener for two Class B teams, powerful Garber's Dukes at upstart Pinconning Spartans.

Pinconning High cheerleaders warm up for the season in a practice session in front of the school before last week's scrimmage.
The Dukes have made the playoffs six straight years under Coach Dave Schwartz, who welcomed a good contingent of 38 players to practice at the Pine Street fields this year. The high numbers promote competitiveness, said Schwartz, who has built a competitive team from his first 0-9 season nine years ago.

GRAFF CHEVROLET HIGH SCHOOL GRID REPORT:

Pinconning also is up in numbers, with 29 gridders bidding for slots on the team and a returning senior quarterback, Barrett Penix, primed to go.

Pinconning Spartan assistant coaches plan strategy, from left, Chad Clark, Wayne Purtell, Jeff Sanak, Matt Dupuis and Randy Moore.
Penix tossed for a TD and ran for two more in a three-way scrimmage with Petoskey and Gladwin last week and, according to second-year Coach Chip Kleinhans, "has unfinished business" on the field this year. Certainly that business might include an upset of Garber and a winning season to blot out the memory of last year's 2-7 record.

The Dukes' senior backfield comprised of returning quarterback Randon Henika, tailback Josh Pierson, a three-year starter, and Abe Bargouthy, "are without a doubt our strength," says Coach Schwartz.

Other teams in action include the rebuilding Western Warriors under veteran Coach Jim Eurick at Flint Central; local dean of the coaches Jeff Bisel with the All Saints Cougars in a non-league tilt at Valley Lutheran; and John Glenn, under Coach Al Balen home to Cadillac.

Watch for our weekly GRAFF CHEVROLET HIGH SCHOOL GRID REPORT and photos of local teams, cheerleaders, bands and fans in action.###
