Classic cars, trucks and motorcycles will fill the street in front of Washington Lanes on Saturday.
Ron DeMitchell handles a phone inquiry on youth bowling next to a Simpsons sign promoting the program.
Good old-fashioned league bowling is getting underway at Washington Lanes, a hot spot in downtown Bay City that is buzzing with fall activity.
A classic car-truck-motorcycle show will sprout in front of the building at 1205 Washington Avenue this Saturday, Sept. 15, noon to 6 p.m., according to Crystal Miller, general manager.
And Homer Simpson, Bart and his Simpson family pals are helping promote youth bowling with free bowling balls, trips to Cedar Point and college scholarships, says Ron Demitchell, assistant manager.
Youngsters can choose from three different programs, one for a free t-shirt and bowling ball at the end of the season, two is for a free trip to Cedar Point at the end of the season, and the third program provides college scholarship money at the season end.
Or, students can just bowl for 15 to 30 weeks at reduced prices. The youth bowling program rolls out Saturday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. Call Ron Demitchell at 893-1000 for information.
"This is all about teaching kids the fundamentals of bowling and letting them have fun," said Mr. Demitchell.
A Handy High graduate who attended Delta College, he has been at the bowling center for four years and is excited about the new Simpsons promotion and helping kids learn to bowl. "Parents can choose from three different days to suit their schedules," he said. An after school program starts Oct. 24.
Chef Mark Jones (Right), formerly from the Bear Track Inn, has reopened "Jonesey's Grill and Catering" in the former Washington Place Deli and has future plans to revive the former Empire Steakhouse, offer catering and banquet facilities.
"Jonesey," a Bay City native, may be familiar to Bay City restaurant goers from his years at Wagner's, the Brass Lantern and the Carousel. He has traveled the country, cooking at hotels in Denver, Las Vegas, San Francisco and elsewhere in refining his skills.
"Jonesey's" customers already have been treated to dishes ranging from a bowl of chili to lobster and gourmet offerings like sautéed shrimp with zucchini. Mr. Jones also plans dinners-to-go like pot roast and other good homestyle food for busy families or seniors. He also plans to open Pinsetter's Lounge for lunch.
Ms. Miller is looking forward to the Downtown Bay City Wine Walk Thursday, Sept. 20 from 5-10 p.m. an event that always sells out and already has a couple thousand tickets sold. The Washington Place theme for the Wine Walk will be "Viva Las Vegas Nite" and will feature 25 cent beer and a country band.
And, how about a good laugh at the ever-popular Comedy Club? The Comedy Club, started a few years ago, has become a Bay City tradition at Washington Place.
Headliner Chili Challis opens the comedy season Saturday, Oct. 13, at 8:30 p.m. Chili is a former writer for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and contributor to the comic strip Mother Goose and Grimm. Feature act is Andy Woodhull.
Look for Heywood Banks to head to Bay City from Las Vegas and the Bob and Tom Show on radio. Hilarious Heywood is a Bay City favorite and always fills the upstairs club rooms, said Ms. Miller.
Open "mic" night gives wannabe comics a chance to introduce the show, that always includes a warm-up act before the main event, giving the crowd its moneys worth.
Oct. 20 will see Steve Brewer on stage, with Ross Duncliffe warming up; and Ward Anderson, author of "The Ultimate Bachelor Guide," comes in Oct. 27, preceded by Joel Fragomeni.
Live Tejano bands like the tri-city area's Groupe Illusion get customers streaming into the place every Saturday night and the Friday night show features a Tejano disc jockey in the Pinsetters Lounge.
Down the lane at Striker's Lounge, a Karaoke DJ brings them in six nights a week.
