Downtown Bay City will smell and taste International on Thursday afternoon.

Tony Jeske, manager at Old City Hall, said, "Were trying to get back to the roots of the early wine-walks where the wine is celebrated and impressively paired and complemented by regionally specific foods."

And Jeske couldn't be more on the money. "We are doing Sicily at Old City Hall and Argentina at The Chambers," added Jeske.

According to Jeske, wine walkers can pretend to be in Sicily drinking Lamura Grillo and eating Tortellini Bolognese and Panzanella (Sicilian Bread Salad), cured meats and marinated artichokes or in Argentina drinking Hinojosa Malbec while tasting Grilled chorizos with fresh salsa or empanadas of Argentina.

"Before you leave you could try dessert of Ameretto or Annisette cookies or Cannoli," Jeske suggested.

The lucky Wine Walk ticket holders will also be able to experience a French wine out of the Loire Valley by Moreau at the Atrium paired with Paella Chicken (Paella is a Saffron seasoned rice with vegetables) or smoked salmon dip or spinach artichoke dip with garlic bread.

"The French eat that all the time over there," said Elaine Fournier who co-owns three of the wine-walk stops (Atrium, Stein Haus and The Princess Wenonah) and is responsible for the menu at each of them. "This event is a chance for us and the other participants to show off what we offer in a festival like setting," added Fournier.

There are fourteen stops on the wine-walk. In addition, there will be samples from St. Laurent's, Water Street Market and the Sweet Boutique - a veritable taste bud pandemonium.

One of the night's most intriguing wines is made right here in Bay City by yours truly (Kevin Leahy). It will be served at the Elks Club. In addition to the kit wine samples of Mango Citrus Symphony and California Trinity, which is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon grapes, Elks will be serving my Mystery Grape Wine AKA (Also Known As) Glen Grape Zinger.

The Zinger has won first place in the MI State Fair Wine Competition the last two years in a row in the red-grape semi-dry category.

The grapes, grown in a garden vineyard in the heart of Michigan were unidentifiable by the Northwest MI Grape Growers Association and three of the most renowned MI State Extension office grape experts. So get there early if you want a taste due to the very limited supply of that particular wine.

I will be on hand at the Elks Club handing out catalogs and making reservations for wine-making parties. Please look me up and give me your feedback on the "Mystery Wine."

In addition to the incredible wines and fancy foods, Wine Walk ticket holders will enjoy the festival of wine while listening to an equally impressive and varied lineup of musical acts.

At Old City Hall, imbibers will enjoy the sounds of Soul Express which as Jeske said, "Is a 7 piece funk blues band that blends soulful sounds with a bass, trumpets, saxophones and other horns, they're just a real cool band."

Back in Germany at the Stein Haus, you can get an earful of Harold Miller, Musiker Maker who plays the accordion while your sampling a Kabinette Riesling and a Gruner Veltliner and eating German sausage with stone ground mustard and saur kraut.

Back in Michigan if you like "our" wines, The Princess Wenonah is the place to go to try the tastes of the lakes or more specifically Leelanau Peninsulas award winning Good Harbor Red or Fenn Valleys Demi-Sec in between tastes of Smoked Whitefish Pate', peel and eat shrimp and crab dip. We know shrimp and crab don't come from Michigan, but remember they're showing off.

There are only a few tickets left if you are inclined to overload your senses with an evening of tastes, scents, sounds and friends; just contact any one of your favorite bars or restaurants downtown and they will help you find a ticket - if there are any left.
