Bay City Central showed heart and determination against Saginaw Heritage in their 28-19 victory Friday night.

After spotting the Hawks a 13 point lead, the Wolves kept their cool and led a balanced attack to take a 14-13 lead with 10:11 left in the second period.

The Wolves rushed for 232 yards led by Luther Ware, who once again broke an 82-yard run to the house and finished with 105 yards on only ten carries.

Defense is key to Central win as Heritage is shut down.
(MyBayCity Photo by Samantha Gould) Trenton Robinson ripped off 84 yards on just six attempts, while Trenton Martin completed 15 of 24 passes and two touchdowns and 202 yards passing.

The Central defense was again instrumental in the win shutting down the Hawk offense that had been averaging over 30 points per game.

With their defensive ends collapsing on quarterback Drew Strongrich, the Wolves eliminated the option play that hurt them on the Hawks first two drives. One jarring hit on Strongrich proved to be too much as he was knocked out of the game with an injury that left the Hawks offense in neutral.

Martin added the Wolves last score from seven yards out with 8:49 left in the game that made it 28-13.

The Hawks made one more run at the Wolves by scoring with 3:05 left then were stopped on the two point conversion. The stop on the extra point may have been critical because the Hawks recovered the ensuing onside kick, but were unable to get the big play they were hoping for being down by nine.

The Wolves move to 5-2 on the year and will make the playoffs with a win next week against Traverse City during their homecoming or the final game against arch-rival Bay City Western.

The Warriors were not as fortunate at Arthur Hill dropping a heart-breaker 24-21 to the Lumberjacks.

Quarterback Matt Grew will be thinking of the tackle that left him a few inches short of the end-zone as time expired.

Although the final score read 24-21, Western threatened the Arthur Hill end-zone twice in the last five minutes. Taking over on their own one yard line the Warriors drove the length of the field putting the Lumberjack defense against the wall, until Chris Webb picked off a Grew pass in his own end-zone.

The Warriors could have been content with their impressive but scoreless drive but they could still taste the victory. The Warrior defense stiffened and forced the Lumberjacks to punt with 50 seconds left, but then they blocked the kick and took over on Arthur Hills ten yard line with forty seconds left and no time-outs.

An incompletion followed by a Grew to Corey Arnold eight yard gain gave Grew enough time to ground the next play and stop the clock.

With fourth and two, and a few clicks on the clock Grew got the call and swept around the end but was pulled down just inches short of the win as time ran out.

The Warriors (4-3, 3-3) showed their heart Friday night and will taste that loss, but not for long, they host Flint Northern next Friday and travel to Central High the following week.

With two more wins the Warriors have an outside chance of making the playoffs, but in the Saginaw valley League every win is tough and two is down right thorny.
