"Strolling French cuisine" is only one of the attractions Friday at the Marshall Fredericks Gallery at Saginaw Valley State University.

Women who have emerged from tree trunks will be the main show.

The "Saints, Sinners and Sauvignon" event, sponsored by The Dow Chemical Company, marks the opening of an exhibit of wood and bronze sculptures by wood carver and sculptor David Hostetler of Athens, Ohio.

Mr. Hostetler sculpts only one subject -- women -- explaining that he finds them more interesting than men.

How he turns hulking tree trunks into alluring female forms is the essence of Hostetler's genius that will be revealed here Friday.

His work is described as "captivating works in wood and bronze that honor and celebrate the female form, inspired by goddesses and celebrated women of historical significance. Hostetler's works are moving, intriguing and a pleasure to touch and see."

Mr. Hostetler has a summer gallery in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and exhibitions of his work are on display in Boston, Milwaukee and Youngstown, Ohio.

Master of Ceremonies Jay Brandow, much-traveled news correspondent of WNEM TV-5, will take a break from the news long enough to preside over the upscale event in the sculpture museum and Arbury Fine Arts Center at SVSU, 5:30 - 9 p.m.

The Jeff Hall Quartet and chanteuse Lauralean Cheatham will provide the background music for the silent auction 6-8 p.m. A live auction of 10 works of art begins at 8 p.m.

The premier of a documentary film "David Hostetler: The Last Dance" will be shown Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall at SVSU and will feature a talk by the artist.

The Hostetler collection may be viewed at the museum from noon to 5 p.m. daily except Sundays through Jan. 25, said Marilyn L. Wheaton, director of the museum. Persons interested in attending the "Saints" event may contact Mrs. Wheaton at 989-964-7082. All proceeds will benefit the museum's educational programs and exhibitions.
