One year ago, All Saints defeated the Red Hawks at our Homecoming game, but the tables were turned this year as the Cougars traveled to Cass City for their Homecoming celebration.

As the Cougar bus neared the stadium, we were suddenly blocked on a four way intersection and would receive front row seats to watch the parade of hyped Hawks fans. From cars carrying court members, to cheerleaders, all eyes turned toward our bus and everyone sent their best intimidating looks our way. A truck chauffeuring some local Cass City boys, booed us as they pointed with pride to their Cass City emblazoned chests. Next we watched with mock horror as four floats rolled by, each depicting some grotesque picture of slaughtered Cougars left in the dust.

Could these disheartening clouds and lighting hold some sort of message about the upcoming game? The Cougars were weighted down by the loss of three players: Kevin Klapish (#23), Bryce Wilcox (#52), and Canton Brissette (#17) who were injured in previous games, were restricted to the sideline for this nights game. Despite their numerical set-back the Cougars were determined to prove themselves, and shut down the steeled Red Hawks.

The Cougars fought relentlessly but the Hawks took advantage of Cougar mistakes, and dominated in the first half. The Red Hawks wiped the field with the Cougars and racked up a 27-0 lead. But the Hawks weren't done with the sleeping Cougars yet; another touchdown and a two point conversion further humiliated the Cougars, and gave Hawk fans the lead they wanted. Heading towards the locker room, things didn't look good for the Cougars, and if they didn't step up, the Hawks would crush them in the second half and we would never be able to live it down.

Janer (24) leaps high but just can't handle the pass just out of his reach.

Echoing these statements the Cougars went to work in the second half and managed to shut down the Red Hawks offensive blitz. Apart from a safety in the Cougar end zone, which gave the Hawks another two points, the Red Hawks were done pushing the Cougars around. The Cougars finally awoke in the fourth quarter, and the offense used every thing they had left against the Hawks. After a offensive engagement around midfield, Josh Sutton (#1) gave Cougar fans something to cheer about in the midst of this tragic defeat. Slipping past the Hawks defense, Sutton ran 56 yards to score the first Cougar touchdown of the night.

But the Cougars weren't done yet. After recovering a onside kick, a miraculous pass from BJ Weaver (#85) to Ricky Phillips (#32) resulted in a 31 yard touchdown. But it was too little, too late for the Cougars, and the Red Hawks claimed their Homecoming victory 37-14. After the game, Coach Bisel told me "The weather delay really hurt us, and it's to bad we didn't fight like this all game."

With three men down, the Cougars would start off with only fifteen men able to play. In the middle of the second quarter another player was injured in the line of duty. One of All Saints key players, and a leader in rushing yards this season, Kevin Bisel (#11) was restricted to the sidelines after he was taken out by a shoulder injury near the Cougar end zone. When asked about what he thought, the only thing he said was, "I wish I could've played more."

This devastating loss is already ancient history to the Cougar team as they prepare for our own Homecoming next Friday against the Brown City Green Devils. With the home crowd and alumni filling the stands, the Cougars are sure to give them a great game.
