The Wolves did some damage early and often against Traverse City Central in their duel Friday night then did what they had to finish off those pesky Trojans.

Most fans let out a sigh of relief when the final seconds ticked off the clock in the 28-21 victory, then released a pent up harmonious "go wolves," cheer as news of Midland High getting beat by Flint Southwestern was announced as they headed for the gates.

Everyone that follows the once 2-2 Wolves knew that meant with a win over Western next week the Wolves would own a piece of the 2007 Saginaw Valley League Championship in addition to the playoff berth they just secured with their sixth win.

It was a display of power and finesse and some big time play out of their seniors. Leading the way was Luther Ware. Ware, a four year varsity football player, showed his talent and strength by amassing 178 yards rushing, two touchdowns, and was everywhere on defense.

Trenton Robinson finished a critical 71-yard drive in the fourth quarter from 18 yards out to go along with his 11-yarder in the second that made it 20-0.

The Wolves were threatening just before half when Traverse City's Tim Ohlhert picked off a pass at the goal line.

The Wolves came out for the third period kind of flat. It might have had something to do with the halftime homecoming festivities. Four Central starters (including Robinson) participated in the half-time festivities. During half-time, the press-box announcer told the crowd that Robinson had committed to Michigan State to play football,

The Trojans put up fourteen points to cut it to 20-14, then came "the drive." Eight plays 71 yards with Ware punishing Trojan defenders on runs of 20 and 11 then Robinson high-stepping it into the end zone to make it 28-14.

TCC didn't back down and put up one more score with 4:42 left with their own long drive when Sam Martin scrambled in from 15 yards out.

The Central defense was called on one last time when TCC took over on their own twenty.

They went for the homerun on the first play tossing it deep when Centrals Robinson raced under it on his own 45-yard line to make the interception with the crowd going wild, until the referee signaled he was out of bounds and TCC was cuing it up again.

Bay City gave up a first down then tightened up their defense with some jarring hits that stopped the Trojan uprising and sealed the win.

This central team has grown up, grown together and became a stronger more mature unit this season with quiet dignity.

The lesson is in representing, and as an alumnus, I am proud of how these young athletes have represented Central on the field and how their coaching staff has molded them into men off it.

They all are big games this late in the season but the Wolves will have their biggest at home this Friday against arch-rival Bay City Western.

Central has their league championship on the line while the Warriors will be fighting to play one more week by qualifying for the playoffs.

If you like hard hitting emotionally charged football rivalries, then be at Elmer Engel Stadium Friday but get there early because the house is gonna be packed.
