Every rivalry in history has one of "those games," when there is more than just pride and bragging rights involved, Friday night was one of "those games."

The Wolves and Warriors did not disappoint the nearly 7500 fans who were there to witness such a battle. The Wolves kept their storied rebound going by winning their sixth game in a row 21-13.

"This ones for all the marbles," said Firefighter and Central alumnus Ray Roznowski.

"Isn't that the new police chief?" Roznowski added, as I turned and saw our Chief of Police, Michael J. Cecchini taking in the ambiance and energy of a fully packed Elmer Engel Stadium while standing near the fence in the Wolves end zone.

This was a big game and everyone knew it.

With an intermittent drizzle and a stiff breeze, the battle was going to be in the trench's, or so you thought. Before the faithful crowd was even settled in Central quarterback Trenton Martin tossed a bomb down the sideline towards touchdown corner to a wide open streaking Alex Busch who proceeded to let the ball slip right through his hands.

That would have been the biggest play of the game had it worked. Martin finished just 5 of 12 for 37 yards and a touchdown in the tough passing conditions.

The real workhorse for the Wolves was Trenton Robinson who scored the first and last Wolves touchdowns and whose "O-line" helped him to his season high of 130 yards rushing with a touchdown and a ten-yard TD reception.

Centrals Luther Ware finished off the scoring for the Wolves with a 32-yard run with 4:22 left in the game and finished with 93 yards rushing.

The fourth quarter began in a nervous 7-7 tie when the Wolves put together a 67-yard scoring drive highlighted by Robinson breaking tackles and carrying Warrior defenders.

An unlikely hero could have been Mitch Martens who filled in for an injured Ryan Brunette and kicked three extra points.

The Wolves went up 21-7 with Wares touchdown then Western found a spark when Warrior quarterback, who the Central defenders thought they sacked promptly bounced up and scrambled another 26-yards into the end zone.

The ensuing extra point kick was wide left and the Warriors were just down eight with over three and a half minutes left. The Warriors attempted a nearly successful onside kick then the Wolves offense obliged them by fumbling the ball into the Warriors Lucas Kozuch's open arms.

The Warriors were down eight and 55-yards from tying the game. Warrior quarterback Matt Grew promptly connected a 21-yard pass to Casey Foley but on the next play the Wolves defensive bandit specialist Justin Reed made a diving interception to end the Warrior uprising.

The closely knit Wolves enter the playoffs at 7-2, while the Warriors will be handing in equipment next week as their season came to a close at 5-4.

Those two teams were much closer matched than the records indicate, the final 21-13 score was much more indicative.

It was hard to take your eyes off the play because you knew any one play could decide the game.

The Wolves earned their right to play another week where they will meet Saginaw Heritage.(Time & Place to be Announced)
