Maybe It's Time For Michigan to Go For Independent Presidential Candidates

Democrats, Republicans Acting Like Fascists in Stripping State of Delegates

Both the Democratic and Republican national committees are "punishing" Michigan and other states for having the temerity to schedule Presidential primaries before those of New Hampshire and Iowa.

Well, paaaaardon meeee!

There was a rumor this was a free country but I guess I heard that by mistake.

The Republicans have stripped half the delegates from Michigan, Florida, South Carolina, Wyoming and New Hampshire because they violated party rules disallowing primaries before Feb. 5.

And the Democrats very undemocratically applied the lash by voting to bar all Michigan delegates from the national convention as punishment.

Banning delegates from party conventions would be much like taxation without representation, wouldn't it? Er, sort of . . . Sounds like disenfranchisement at least.

I didn't know political parties were into punishment. It seems to me if a state is punished, it might well create some repercussions.

Like a loss of votes when the Presidential election comes around.

There are rumors floating around, some emanating from Tennessee, that Republican Ron Paul and Democrat Dennis Kucinich are considering an independent run. That would really throw a monkey wrench into campaign plans of both parties, and perhaps they deserve it if it happens.

The big problem seems to be that New Hampshire and Iowa have traditionally been first and want to keep their prestigious positions as "determinators" of candidates.

Michigan's Democrats and Republicans got together (I am not making this up) to bring additional clout to the state by holding an early primary.

Lord knows we need it since we have drawn so little positive attention from Washington in the past seven years. Only Cuba, perhaps, or maybe Iran, seem to be in less favor with the lords of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm nearly wore out the phone lines trying to get President Bush to meet with her to attempt to resolve the problems with the automobile industry.

Word from the east and west is that New Hampshire and Iowa have their noses out of joint and are pressuring candidates to support their displeasure.

The Iowa and New Hampshire Democratic party bosses were "tut-tutting" all over C-Span Sunday night about Michigan's brazen attempt to get some recognition. Maybe Rodney Dangerfield should be the governor since we "don't get no respect."

Even if Michigan delegates are seated at the party conventions, as Sen. Carl Levin predicts, the affront will not be forgotten. As Rep. John Dingell, Democrat from Detroit, says: "In Michigan we know how to fight."

Many party bosses apparently believe that the eventual nominee will insist that the delegates will have their credentials restored at the convention. That could prove complicated for travel and other scheduling and might be difficult for delegates to reconcile their feelings, especially if the nominee didn't support Michigan's bid or want to campaign here because of the early primary flap.

We like the attitude of Democratic state chairman Mark Brewer who, when told Michigan has 30 days to reconsider holding its primary and schedule a later vote, told them: "BLAAAAAHHHH!

Good for him!
