Bay City native Eric Devendorf has carried city connection in basketball higher than anyone in history.

Is he an All Big East or even All American prospect?

You bet!

Perhaps Bay City's all-time best basketball player, junior Eric Devendorf is making highlight footage on national TV with a sensational start at 6-2 Syracuse.

The Orange face off against a 6-1 University of Rhode Island Rams team Saturday night at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

The Orange is coming off a huge 70-68 win over Virginia, after which Devendorf was heard to exclaim that he hoped the NCAA tournament officials were taking notice. Syracuse was stung last year when they were ignored by the NCAA tourney.

The university's Orange Access glowed: "Devendorf poured in 16 points and matched a season-high with six assists. The Bay City native scored in double-figures for the ninth straight time and 16th out of the last 17 tries dating back to last season. Devendorf's 16-point effort improved his career total to 1,081, surpassing Vaughn Harper (1965-68) and Pete Chudy (1958-61) for sole possession of 46th-place all-time on the Orange's scoring chart."

Last year, as a sophomore, Devendorf was named honorable mention All Big East, scoring a career-high 22 points against Notre Dame and notching 20 points in Villanova and Rutgers. He scored in double figures in 22 games and knocked down 54 three pointers.

Perhaps the NCAA tourney snub came because of the soft schedule that this year included the College of St. Rose and LeMoyne (exhibition), St. Joseph's, Fordham, Siena, Colgate, Cornell, etc.

To be sure, tougher opponents later in the season include St. John's (Jan. 2), University of South Florida (Jan. 5), Cincinnati (Jan. 9), Georgetown (Jan. 21 and Feb. 16), Connecticut (Feb. 6), Notre Dame (Feb. 24), Pittsburgh (Mar. 1), Seton Hall (Mar. 5) and Marquette (Mar. 8).

Devendorf bulked up over the summer to a reported 189 pounds on a 6-4 frame and came out firing. So far he has racked up a 17.0 points per game average on 45 percent shooting from the field, 2.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. He is shooting about 36 percent from three point range.

As is always the case in college basketball, last year's star freshman must contend with this year's star. The Orange have put another frosh phenom on the floor in the person of Donte Green, who is putting up big numbers and wowing the crowds.

The Syracuse University website is laudatory about the budding cage star from Bay City, stating:

"In just three seasons, Devendorf became Bay City Central's all-time scoring leader with 1,224 points. He earned all-state honors in Michigan three times.

"As a junior, Devendorf averaged 30.6 points and 8.0 rebounds a game for Coach Joe Ricard. Devendorf was a two-time Reebok ABCD Camp All-Star. Following his junior season, he participated in the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival. He ranked second on the North squad in scoring average (16.6 ppg.) and led the team in steal average (2.4 spg.) Devendorf helped the North to a silver medal in the event. He also participated in the NBA Players Association camp."

Devendorf finished his prep career at Oak Hill, Virginia, Academy and was a McDonald's All America selection.

Eric Michael Devendorf was born April 21, 1987, in Bay City, Michigan. He is the son of Curt and Cindy Devendorf. He has two sisters. Devendorf is pursuing a degree in communication and rhetorical studies.###
