In Friday nights heated Tip Off Classic contest at John Glenn, the All Saints Cougars battled the Pinconning Spartans in the championship game of the pre-season tournament.
The teams battled neck and neck the whole game - two elite teams blazing up and down the court in a fast paced, action packed contest.
Each team fought and managed to attain the lead throughout the game, but only managed to go ahead by a point or two before being overtaken by the opposing team.
The fast paced display of stellar talent from both sides of the court warranted a championship. Neither side let the other hold the lead for long, and with only thirty-one seconds left in the game the score stood at 40 to 41 with the Spartans holding on to their tight lead.
Seconds later the game seemed over when Spartan Randall Howard(#33) was fouled and made his two free-throws. With one fateful second remaining on the clock the Cougars Preston Oakes(#1) was fouled attempting a three point shot.
With the pressure mounting, Preston made the first two then was put on ice by a Spartan time-out. Oakes, who led Bay County with his .821 free-throw accuracy last season, then missed his final tying free-throw.
The Pinconning Spartans walked off the floor with a 43-42 win - successfully defending their Bay County Tip-Off Classic.
The Cougars begin their regular season this Tuesday at home, but the talk of the school is all about December 17th when the Cougars will again face off against the Spartans, on their home court.
Prior to the heart pounding championship game John Glenn also was victorious over Essexville Garber 45-41 in their own see-saw battle.
After a 10-0 run in just a 1:32 span the Dukes held a 36-33 lead with just 4:12 left.
The host Bobcats would not be denied as they battled back with a couple quick buckets then Chuck Baumer put the game away with back- to-back jumpers including a three pointer that sealed the win.
