America Recycles Day (ARD) was observed recently during which people and businesses were reminded how important it is to recycle and buy recycled products.

America's energy independence is at stake.

Among participating firm owners in ARD was Gary Rechsteiner of Rapid Refill Ink located at 4118 Wilder Road, Bay City, who noted the small tasks that can improve the quality of life and make a difference to the environment are limitless.

Mr. Rechsteiner, who has a second Rapid Refill Ink location next to the Magic Bean Cafe, 5789 State St. Saginaw, said:

"Whether it's tossing that soda can and newspaper into a recycling bin instead of the garbage or purchasing organic products as opposed to their over-processed counterparts, we all can help the environment."

Rapid Refill Ink understands this philosophy and specializes in re-manufacturing, refilling and retail sales of inkjet and laser toner cartridges for printers, copiers, fax machines and all-in-one machines for both consumers and businesses.

Rapid Refill Ink's products are not only environmentally friendly, but overall savings on re-manufactured cartridges can be up to 50 percent below those of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) brand name cartridges.

In the United States alone, nearly eight cartridges are thrown away every second, according to Recharger Magazine.

Each plastic toner requires 3 1/2 quarts of oil to produce and 2 1/2 ounces of oil are used to produce each new inkjet cartridge; on average, these cartridges cost $4 each. Though the amounts seem small on their own, they quickly add up -- to the tune of roughly 200,000 tons and billions of dollars taking up space in your area landfill.

With re-manufactured cartridges, Rapid Refill Ink aims to chip away at the unnecessary waste produced by similar products and companies.

"Some cartridges can be re-manufactured four to eight times," said Rechsteiner, local owner of Rapid Refill Ink. "If you look at how many cartridges are sold each day and how many can be re-manufactured, you'd see how prudent it would be in the long run."

Rapid Refill Ink's green mentality extends into the store design as well. The countertops, which have become one of the stores' trademarks, are made from sunflower seed husks that are glued together to create a distinctive look, the walls are 100 percent wheat stock and the production area floor is made of reclaimed tile.

"We utilize these products because it works into our whole philosophy of rethink, reuse, recycle and re-ink," says Steve Hockett, CEO of Rapid Refill Corp.

Rapid Refill Ink is a U.S.-based retailer in the multi-billion dollar ink and toner industry with storefront operations that utilize state-of-the-art technology and equipment to re-manufacture cartridges.

Overall savings on re-manufactured cartridges can be up to 50 percent below those of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) brand name cartridges. The Rapid Refill Ink store database lists over 1,000 different inkjet and laser toner cartridges, including refilled and brand name cartridges.

Rapid Refill Ink already has franchise agreements for the opening of approximately 150 locations in the next several years. Its first international expansion is anticipated to begin in the next 12 months. The company is expecting substantial growth from multi-unit franchisees that would each open three to five units over the next five to seven years.

Rapid Brands Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Rapid Refill Corp., are traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) Venture Exchange under the stock symbol RAP.
