Although being overshadowed by defending state champion Saginaw High and recent upstart in the SVL, Arthur Hill, the Flint Central Phoenix have a storied program and quite a reputation of their own.

The Bay City Central boys team threw reputations out the new windows in their hallway of fame Friday night as they battled the Phoenix (5-2, 2-2) to a very competitive 69-64 loss.

If the Wolves believed in reputations, they might as well not lace up their shoes as SVL representatives have been playing in state Championships at Breslin Center regularly through the years.

The SVL is undoubtedly the most talented, toughest basketball league in the state, but the Wolves "laced 'em up anyway" because they are competitors and they will be winners, just not Friday night.

The Wolves (2-6, 0-3) battled the Phoenix right to the end, but unfortunately for them had given up too much ground early as they trailed at the end of the first quarter 24-8.

The Wolves rally was going according to plan by the end of the third as they trailed by just nine, 47-38.

Although the Phoenix nerves were rattled by the home team comeback they were steely at the line as they iced 11 of 15 free throws as the Wolves tempted their resolve.

Brad Norman tickled the twine for 28 points and Justin Reed added 13 as the Wolves watched time run out on their comeback bid.
