Eric Jylha to Speak on Civil War Photography Wednesday Night at Stein Haus

The work of famed photographer Matthew Brady will be discussed.

Why are there no photographs of Civil War battles?

Television personality Eric Jylha will explain that Wednesday night at the 7th Michigan Cavalry Civil War Round Table in a 7 p.m. presentation at the Stein Haus, 1108 N. Water St.

"It wasn't like taking pictures today," Mr. Jylha explains. "The technology was very different."

The work of famed photographer Matthew Brady will be discussed. Mr. Jylha will also explain how Brady seemed to be everywhere at the same time during the war.

"Sailor" Bob Boquette and Paul Davis, both of Saginaw, will display examples of the various types of photographs, tintypes, daugerrotypes, etc., from their collections.

Mr. Jylha also will talk about historic photographs of Abraham Lincoln that surfaced recently.

He will show many Civil War photos in a PowerPoint presentation.

Mr. Jylha is marketing director of the Maier & Associates Financial Group, 5982 West Side Saginaw Road, and chair of the Maier Charitable Foundation.

He was a broadcaster and weather reporter for 21 years for WNEM-TV Channel 5 where he still works part-time. Before that he was a news reporter and on-air personality for WSGW Radio.

He began his Journalism career as a student reporter for the Bay City Central High newspaper, the Centralia. He graduated from Central High in 1968.

Mr. Jylha got into broadcasting at Delta College and at Michigan State University. He worked for WILX-TV, the Public Broadcasting Service affiliate in Lansing and also worked for a radio station in Phoenix, Arizona.

He is well-known as a historian and is president of the board of the Bay County Historical Society, represents the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce at many events and is active in civic and charitable causes.

Persons interested in attending the Civil War Round Table may do so by showing up at the Stein Haus and registering before the presentation. You need not be a member to attend. Annual membership fee is $20 and there is a $5 charge for attendance at single programs. The group meets the second Wednesday of each month from September to April, when an annual dinner and special program is presented.
