Mark your calendars and shine up your bowling ball. The USBC-Sponsored "Bowl for the Cure" Fundraiser is set for Alert Lanes (January 26) and Washington Lanes (February 3).

Local President and event organizer for 2008 is Deb Besaw (Pictured at Right). Besaw hopes to raise as much a $4,000 with the two-weekend event.

$10 from each entry will go toward the Fundraiser and participating bowlers can also get pledge sheets to assist them with the fund-raising.

"Last year, (our 1st year) we raised about $800," Besaw said. Besaw went on to explain that only a "Singles" event was held last year . . . and it was on St. Patrick's Day.

In 2008, Besaw and the Association has scheduled weekend events on January 26th (Alert) and February 3 (Washington Lanes.) There will be a "Team" event first at Alert and then "Singles" the following week at Washington.

  • Saturday, 1:00pm, January 26, 2008 - Alert Lanes - Essexville - TEAM EVENT
    Contact: Joyce Olson-Burpee (989) 667-1924 or Deb Besaw (989) 280-9630

  • Sunday 1:00pm, February 3, 2008 - Washington Lanes - Bay City - SINGLES
Contact: Jim Tesner (989) 893-1000 or Deb Besaw (989) 280-9630

  • Entry Fee is $18 per bowler for the TEAM EVENT. Entry Fee is $22 per bowler for the SINGLES.

The bowling is open to anyone, even un-sanctioned bowlers. Un-sanctioned men will be given a 175 average and women will be assigned 140. Besaw says it's going to be a fun event. "It's 9-Pin NO-Tap," Besaw says. "It's a great tourney and a great cause."

There will also be raffles and drawings going on during each event.

The local association, which is fully behind the "Bowl for the Cure" project will be holding a 50/50 raffle this upcoming week (January 21) in an effort to raise awareness of the event. "We'll try to get to every league during the week with our 50/50 so that everyone knows what we've got going as far as the fundraiser is concerned," Besaw said.

Bowl for the Cure is a nationwide breast cancer awareness and fund-raising initiative sponsored by the United States Bowling Congress. Through the efforts of bowlers across the country, Bowl for the Cure has raised more than $6 million since its inception in the 2000-01 bowling season. All funds raised benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
