Celebrate Valentine's Day
at The DoubleTree Hotel February 14, 2008

Celebrate Valentine's Day with an evening of dancing, dinner and theatre with The Bijou Orchestra presenting Valley Stories on Thursday, February 14 at Bay City's beautiful DoubleTree Hotel. The event begins at 6PM.

Valley Stories is unlike any other arts event presented in celebration of Valentine's Day. The evening begins with The Bijou Orchestra performing for dancing. The dance floor opens at 6, and the orchestra plays continuously until dinnertime.

(Above) Leo Najar, Artistic Director of the Bijou Orchestra, said, "Our dance mix is unlike anybody else's," says Leo Najar, Artistic Director of the Bijou Orchestra. "We play everything from Viennese waltzes to 40's swing with a mixture of other dances in between."

Following dancing, patrons enjoy a multi-course plated dinner with their choice of beef or fish entrée. Wine and beer are included in the admission price from the time the doors open through dinner. There is also a cash bar.

For many, the climax of the evening comes after dinner with the presentation of three original one act musicals written in honor of three couples who have been selected for their impact on the community.

This year's honorees are Lin and Phae Dorman of Midland, Art and Linda Lewis of Saginaw and Tim and Jane Moulthrop of Bay City. Each couple will see a romantic moment from their lives transformed into a miniature musical written and performed by local theatrical artists. The shows are being written by Mary Lou Benecke, Rob Clark, Jeff Yantz, and Leo Najar.

"We are very proud of this event, not only because of the quality of all that we present, but because it gives us, as an arts institution, the opportunity to spotlight the work of others, who, like ourselves, work to make the Saginaw Valley a better place to live and work," Najar explains.

"Each of these couples have been selected to be honored because of the long history they have of contributing to the quality of life in the community. At the same time, since it is Valentine's Day, we like to also highlight a 'love story' from their lives that they have chosen to share with the audience." "Valley Stories is a unique project, and we feel honored that last year's show was selected by the Saginaw News as one of the ten outstanding arts events of 2007." added Najar.

Patrons who haven't yet picked out a Valentine gift can bid for items from the silent auction tables. Gifts include hotel stays, sunset sailing, dinner at fine restaurants and romantic gifts for men and women.

Valley Stories is sponsored in part by Bay Regional Medical Center.

Tickets for Valley Stories are $75 per person. Additionally, there is a $125 patron ticket available. Patrons receive credit for a $50 tax deduction and will have their names listed in the program. Tribute gifts from persons unable to attend will also be recognized in the program book. For ticket information, call or visit the Bay Musical Arts Box Office: 917 Washington Avenue, Bay City, Michigan, 48708. The box office phone number is (989) 892-4200.

The Bijou Orchestra takes its name from the Bijou Theater, one of the earliest Bay City theaters, which later became known as the Bay and eventually the State. The ensemble is composed of thirteen outstanding musicians drawn from Michigan and beyond to perform in this challenging medium in which every player is a soloist.

The orchestra is supported in part by grants from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, the Kantzler Foundation, the Russell H. & Maxine E. Smith Foundation, and the Bay Area Community Foundation. Major corporate contributors include the SC Johnson Corporation, Dow Corning, Bay Regional Medical Center, OmniSource and Thelen Auto Group.
