The Cougars were clearly defined as the underdogs in Thursday nights duel on the court. Surprising everyone, and perhaps themselves as well, the Cougars played an amazing first period and were actually ahead at the start of the second. After that stellar period the Cougars threw aside all their doubt, and as Coach Gerulski said, "played their best game yet."

The Cougars would hang tough with the Raiders and managed to tie the game with only about ten seconds left in the first half. As the Cougar fans realized they might actually have a chance of beating a superior team, the Cougar girls chipped in another lay-up at the last second to capture the lead at the half 24-22.

The third period began with a defensive stalemate. Neither side allowed the other to score until a minute and a half had expired. After the Raiders scored their tying bucket the Cougars struck right back with one of their own. This battle lasted till the end of the period as both teams buffed up their scores; yet neither team managed to secure a commanding lead.

However, the Raiders are not hailed as one of the best teams in the girls league for nothing. After the start of the fourth period the Raiders exploded with a newfound ferocity. Unfortunately for them the Cougars were not planning to lose their chance at a win. The Cougars new plan was simple, yet incredibly successful. Get the ball, and pass it to Ashley Bowker(#24). Bowker would chip in three pointer after three pointer to keep the Cougars in the race. However, even this was not enough. The Cougars weakness remains the same; fewer players than the Raiders. The Cougars were losing their fire, and the Raiders would capitalize on this by moving the ball around to work our defense.

With only 42.4 seconds left in the game, the game ended for the Cougars. As Raider Jenna Thompson(#44) sunk another free throw the score became 46-50. The Cougar fans found themselves beaten; but despite the loss, the Cougar girls played possibly their best game yet, both defensively and offensively. Top of the scoring chart went to Sophomore Julie Spyhalski with 14, and Junior Ashley Bowker chipped in 9. Coach Gerulski summed it up saying "now if we can only play this well in our upcoming games."

Look for the Lady Cougars to be home on Tuesday and Thursday next week; making it a basketball fest in the Cougar home gym, as the boys play on Wednesday and Friday.
