The Great Lakes Cancer Institute (GLCI), a partnership between Michigan State University (MSU) and McLaren Health Center (MHC), is providing Bay area residents with the latest and best weapons to fight cancer.

GLCI will integrate research and educational resources with physicians and facilities of McLaren. The Bay area medical community, including Bay Regional Medical Center, now have access to MSU's Clinical Trials Office and Scientific Review Committee.

What does all this meanto area residents concerned about health care?

Free or low-cost screenings for a variety of cancers will be offered.

"The overall goal is to provide Michigan residents with a leading resource for cancer patient care and education, significant cancer research and rapid access to the latest treatment, trials and medicines," say GLCI officials.

Key components of GLCI will be housed as follows: basic research faculty at MSU; clinical and research faculty at Mclaren's acute care facilities, including Bay, Ingham, Lapeer and Flint regional medical centers.

"Cutting edge treatments such as barachytherapy, gene-targeted drug therapy and other modalities will be available through GLCI locally, rather than at a university treatment facility," officials state.

"GLCI will partner with community-based physicians to provide access to the same type of clinical protocols previously available only at academic health centers," GLCI officials add.

A statewide network ofaccredited physicians is expected to number 300 by year end.

Physicians and patients who would like more information may call GLCI's Flint office, 1-866-696-4524.
