Home Owners in Bay County who have need for improvements to their property may have work done at no cost if they qualify, according to Cathy Short, director of the Group Workcamps project coming back to Bay County in Summer 2008.

The projects are paid for by camp participant fees. The workcampers pay to participate. Several area churches are working together as co-sponsors: First Presbyterian Church, Messiah Lutheran Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Trinity Episcopal, and Fremont Avenue United Methodist.

Sponsoring organizations in the past have included SC Johnson, Sam's Club, The Presbytery of Lake Huron, and Waste Management.

"We are very excited to offer free home improvement assistance to you." said Ms. Short. "However, there are a few things you need to know about the project before you fill out an application."

If your home is chosen as a worksite:

  • The work will be performed by teen-aged and adult volunteers who will come to Bay City as members of Christian youth groups;

  • The campers assigned to your home will be very interested in you and want to spend time getting acquainted with you (and your family) during the week! You could grow to think of them as your "kids" or "grandkids"!

  • Your home will be assigned a crew of 6-12 workers, with at least one or two adults present at all times;

  • You must be home all week while the crew is working;

  • You must provide access to water, restrooms, and electricity;

  • You must provide a safe environment for teens. Unacceptable circumstances include the presence of firearms, illegal drugs, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and unsanitary living conditions;

  • We will agree upon what work will be done. It is possible that we will plan to do a variety of small projects on your home; the workcampers will finish as many of them as they can during the camp week. Any projects that the campers do not begin will be considered canceled. Leftover materials will be picked up for any canceled projects, and the church will not be responsible for completing the canceled projects.

    "Filling out an application does not guarantee that we will work on your home," she said. "We will be selecting project sites based upon the nature of the work requested, and degree of assistance needed.

    "As we receive applications, we will be contacting homeowners who qualify to arrange home visits. The earliest applicants will receive first consideration. In the early spring, we will begin to make our final selections, and homeowners will be notified."

    "If you are interesting in applying for this program, call to apply by phone 239-1217. We will receive applications until the entire summer is scheduled."###
