The Nathan Weidner Children's Foundation helps financially challenged families with scholarships to send their children to college.

Last Sunday they held their fourth annual chili cook-off at Midland Street Pub.

"I have been doing this for fifteen years now," said Renie Wyzgowski owner of Midland Street Pub. She was referring to the chili contest formerly held at Bishops Bar that morphed into the Nathan Weidner Chili cook-off when she became the owner of O'Hares and Midland Street Pub.

"This is a great cause that helps the kids locally and I'm glad to help any way I can," added Wyzgowski. Wyzgowski and her patrons also raised $300.00 for the foundation during their Super Bowl celebration.

"The cook-off raised $175.00 for the foundation last year," said event organizer Matt Weidner. The event raises money from chili entrée fee's ($25.00) and customers pay just $5.00 to have the opportunity to sample fifteen or more of the "Best Chili's in Bay City."

And oh yes . . . they were so good!

"It's always nice to try different things on a snowey cold day in February, especially chili," said Julie Kennedy, one of the lucky patrons who braved the sub-zero temps outside while warming herself with one of the hot, spicey offerings.

You may think $25.00 is a bit steep for an entry fee, but if your chili is good enough, this contest pays good money and pumps up chili cooker's pride, and its all for a good cause.

Carol Skrocki took home $150.00 for her winning blend of tomatoes, beef, beans and spices. Her secret;

"A long day of slow cooking it and a whole clove of garlic my uncle grew," was her proud reply.

Second place and $100.00 went to Sara Johnston while Sara Weidner took home $25.00 for her third place concoction.

The People's Choice award winner was Lee Latocki who was excited to share his secrets to success;

"Tomato filet's, Sacramento Bloody Mary Mix, purple onion and cilantro, none of that weird stuff," was his candid response.

When asked what his favorite was, Mark Weidner said, "I really liked #2. It is delicious and resembles the one I should have made," he laughed.

The contest's chili offerings are anonymously numbered until all judging is complete.

The judges for the event, in no particular order, were a "who's who" of Bay City politics and business owners; Charlie Brunner (Mayor) and his wife Judy, Kim Coonan (County Commissioner), Mike Buda (former Mayor), Bill Stevens (Stevens Cycle), Sally Englehardt, Marie Kurzer (City Commissioner) and Barb Katt (former commissioner and widow of former Mayor Bob Katt)

"I can't think of a better thing to be doing on a cold February afternoon with a Miller Lite in my hand, it's a tough job but somebody has to do it," said Mayor Brunner after the event.

Put a note in your planner for next February, fire up those crock pots, tune up that chili recipe or come out and eat the most chili you can for $5.00, either way it's a great cause and wonderful event in the dead of winter.
