Playing the roll of the underdog, Central had a plan for the Chemics.
Both teams opened up with defensive objectives as each applied the full court press.
Central figured on scoring in the paint but open shots
were hard to find.
Midland opened up the game with a three-point attack.
The Chemics plan worked out better as they held a nine point lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was all defense as both teams
together combined for just nine points.
Opening the second half, Midland seemed to find an answer to
handling the tough Wolves defense by pushing the ball
up the court and taking quick open shots.
The Wolves looked to get back into the game from behind the three arc with quick shots and then looking for players slashing to the
basket, but their cold shooting continued and lead to Midland going ahead by 17 by the end of the third period.
The Wolves showed no quit as they continued their
aggressive full court press.
They forced Midland
to turn over the ball several times resulting in easy
lay ups and helped Central narrow the lead to 11 with 2:48 remaining.
Midland
never felt threatened and got two quick turnovers of their own resulting in four quick
points and put an end to the Wolves comeback.
Central coach Todd Thunberg commented on the game, "We knew we were the
underdogs coming into the game. Our goal was to keep
Midland at 40 points which we did except for a couple end
of the game baskets. We were 6 for 32 in the paint, we had a hard time
getting shots, for the game, we were 9 for 57. That is just not
going to cut it."
The Wolves end their season 2-17 while the Chemics set up an all Midland final with their win. Midland Dow beat Mount Pleasant 35-31 Wednesday to get to the Championship.
