Euclid Auto, the winning team of Phil Irish, Randy Podleski, Stan Theisen, Dave Kowalski, and Dave Howard can brag until next year as they battled sixteen teams to victory.

Everyone that bowls in Bay City wants to make it to this tournament. What started as sixteen teams vying for the title was whittled down to just one winner on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday afternoon at Eastland Lanes, Euclid Auto, bowling out of Alert Lanes knocked off one team after another on their way to the Title.

Euclid Auto was led by their anchor Dave Kowalski who is also the lane coach at Bangor John Glenn. Kowalski "practiced what he preaches," (to his high school bowlers) as he led his team to victory.

"Every time we needed six or eight pins for the win, Dave came through for us," said team captain Stan Theisen.

For their $15.00 entry fee, they now can put $500.00 into their team kitty.

"Out of sixteen games, we only had one under a deuce," added Theisen.

There's only one Bakers Tournament a year that rotates between houses and this year the Title belongs to Euclid Auto made up of Phil Irish, Randy Podleski, Stan Theisen, Dave Kowalski and Dave Howard.

Runners-up and taking home $250.00 for their efforts was the Hot Mix team out of Monitor lanes made up of Jerry Czinder, Jack Karmel, Randy Vantol, Steve Kearly and their anchor Dave Watson.

"We had a pretty good time of it. Were just a bunch of one night a week bowlers," said Czinder after the match.

It was a sweet recollection for Jack Karmel who at 75 years young reminisced about when he last won the tournament, "I have a nice engraved clock at home from when my team won it in 90-91," said Karmel.

"Jack has the oldest ball in the house," remarked team mate Steve Kearsley.

"It's a sixteen pound Brunswick," added Karmel.

According to Mike Kasperski, Bay Area USBC Association Manager, "We don't do anything special with the lanes we just draw for lane assignments to make it equal."

It was nip and tuck all day as nearly every match went down to the tenth frame.

I asked Jim Tesner from Washington Lanes how he did, "We lost our first game but the beer tasted good," was his cheerful reply.

Bay City Bowling Association Manager Mike Kasperski enjoyed the heated competition and said he is looking forward to the Junior Tournament that is next week.
