Leprechaun Run Kicks off weekend of St. Pats Road Races

The 3rd Annual Bay Area Runners Club (BARC) Fitness Expo was held Saturday March 15, 2008 at the Bay County Community Center.

The Fitness Expo ran from 9a.m. to 5 p.m. Fitness and community health experts supported and helped prepare runners and walkers for the upcoming 35th Annual Al/Kayner's St. Pat's Races.

The Leprechaun run which was held Saturday at 2:00 kicked off the weekend of road races. Children 12 and under, ran 1/8,1/4 or 1/2 mile races down JFK Drive.

(Right) President of the BARC, Ted Davenport said, "Lots of work goes into preparing for these races." Davenport who also coaches The Bay City Central Boys track team, participates in the road race each year.

Late registration and packet pick-ups were also available during the expo. Ann Gatza, Vice President of the BARC and director of the races, said, "We had 1500 people signed up by noon, and gave away 500 pairs of gloves early this morning to the first 500 who came in early to sign up."




(Above Left) Marty Shultz, director of the Pinconning Cheesetown Challenge was promoting their annual road races being held June 14, 2008, which is also part of the CheeseTown Festival weekend, which is an all weekend event, including fireworks, softball and little league tournaments, a wine and cheese party, and much more. (Shultz pictured with Cheesetown mascot) (Above Right) Samantha Bosewell, volunteer and Mark Vick, member of BARC volunteer their time at the expo distributing T-shirts to the runners and walkers.




(Above Left) Gary Brimmer, representative of "The Stick" demonstrates on race director, Gatza, explaining the science of muscle management. (The stick is a muscle massager and is used as a training tool by athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Centers. (Go to http://www.thestick.com - It's Awesome!) (Above Right) Peterson brothers, Cory and Scott who run in the St. Pats race every year stopped in to pick up their race packet. Cory ran the 8K and Scott ran the 5K. Consequently, they BOTH finished 5TH in their age group.




(Above Left) The Hilyards, Deb and Chuck from WWIMPS handed out free sample of "Life Force V" a nutrition supplement as they promoted the "Iron Wolf Tri 2008" Olympic length no swim triathlon on May 24, 2008 in Omer, Michigan. (Above Right) From "Runners" store on Wilder in Bay City, Owner, Bill Thompson, Manager, Matthew Doozan and mascot "Ali". According to Thompson they focus on Gait analysis which helps athletes run more efficiently and identifies posture-related or movement-related problems in people with injuries. (Above Left) Mark Bauman of Bauman's Running & Walking Shop, from Flint, participates at the Fitness Expo every year. (Above Right) Deb Tophan, 55 from Mayville, is one of the top walkers in Michigan. Tophan's very first race was in 1993 in Bay City, and she has been competing nationwide ever since. Tophan put on a clinic teaching other walkers the proper technique on power walking. Topham was confident on winning and winning she did, "Female Overall Winner" in the 5K walk, her time was 28:59!



Debbie Best from Covenant Health Care was on hand for any one who wanted their blood pressure checked and also promoting a free 7-minute assessment.



From Old Town Gym (L/R), Gary Stanley, Beth Chorba and Owner, Ray Neering. Neering is in the process of having a new facility built on Raven Lane just off of North Union. The new facility will have approximately 13,000 sq.ft. adding swimming, hot tub, 2 dry saunas and a child care area. Neering is looking to have a grand opening sometime near the end of April 2008.
