Club Begins Planning Next Major Project

The Bay City Rotary held a club assembly last Tuesday to discuss the next major project the club will undertake. Following the meal the members at each table filled out and discussed a survey, which will be compiled by the committee and used to focus continuing discussions.

Major projects are long term fund raising efforts usually lasting four to five years and raising as much as a quarter million dollars.

Almost ten years ago the club's major major project funded the position of Youth Librarian for the Bay County Library System for a five year period. At the end of that period the Library System took over the funding responsibilities.

The current project, now nearing completion, raised well over $200,000 and focused on community beautification and infrastructure. The project had two parts. One funded three micro parks, each featuring a historic kiosk display. One park is outside the Planetarium and the second is at the Waterfall Park.

The second part of the current project funds the landscaping for the entrance to the restored Pere Marquette Depot. A third historic kiosk will be part of this phase. The landscaping should be starting very soon.

CLUB NEWS

The "Love Bag Project", sponsored by the Rotary Club and the Lions Club, kicked off with an article in the Bay City Times and distribution of information and signs. The goal of this project is to collect 500 duffel bags, back packs, and suitcases to be distributed to foster children. The program will be administered by Lutheran Child and Family Services. Donations may be dropped off now through April 30 at a number of locations.

Congratulations to Eric Jylha who has been nominated as club President for the 2010-2011. Eric will follow Deb Lutz and Anne Trahan in this position.

Another new Rotary Club is being considered for Oscoda. The sponsoring clubs will be Tawas and Pinconning/Standish. The Bay City club will act as adviser.

Andreas and Tracy Teich have issued a $3,000 challenge for Polio Plus. They will match any donations by Rotarians up to $3,000 over three years as the international drive is stepped up to meet the $100 million challenge to Rotary by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Mike Stoner announced that the West African Group Study Exchange Team will be here April 13; the Australian team will arrive the week before and will be working with the Pinconning-Standish club.
