Click! Click! That loud cricket-like sound you hear all over Bay County is the ever-growing, ear-shattering sound of clicking computer mice as more and more local internet surfers visit
MyBayCity.com.
If you're reading my column this week, you're part of the reason that
MyBayCity has become an internet success story.
Last month (July 2003),
MyBayCity counted over 108,000 hits. That's almost 4 times as many hits as we had just 6 months ago. That will add up to over a million hits a year . . . and growing every day.
Now I'm going to ask you to (personally) make
MyBayCity an even greater success.
Here's How!
If you like what you see and read on
MyBayCity . . .
Click Here to e-mail this column to a three friends or relatives. Then, every timewe publish a new issue of MyBayCity, they too can receive the
"Good News" about your (and mine) home town, Bay City, Michigan.
Help us spread the good news!
I've been a writer since 1971 and involved in newspaper publishing for almost 30 years. I guess once newspaper ink gets in your blood . . . there's really no way of getting away from it.
In reality, I'm actually an English Major turned Journalist . . . A Journalist that became a Publisher (of other people's magazines) . . . A Publisher forced to be a Businessman . . . A Businessman molded into a Computer Consultant . . . AComputer Consultant turned back into a Journalist . . . and finally . . . A Journalist who is again, a Publisher.
With the success of
MyBayCity, it appears that my writing/newspaper career has come full circle.
It's been almost 20 years since Bay County Sports Page (Bay City Enterprise) ceased publishing.
Sports Page always promised
"More Than Just The Score." MyBayCity.com promises (and delivers)
"More Than Just The (and I don't mean Al) Gore."I have a folder on my desk called "Sports Page - The Next Generation." Inside that folder, there are a number of yellowed spread sheets and business plans (about one every five years or so) that are subtle, chronological reminders (to me) that I need to publish and communicate.
But it's 2003 and print media is not as popular as it once was. Starting (or re-starting) a new publication is out of the question. Communication via the internet is the here and now. Today, publishing is not so much about ink and paper as it is a function of computers and internet connections and bandwidth and download speeds.
But the success of a publication (whether paper or computer-based) is still predicated on the same criteria --- READERSHIP!
Give the people what they want. That's what
MyBayCity is all about. I think (as I always have) that readers want good news -- or at least a balance or mix of the good and the bad - let's say a balanced perspective . . .
"More Than Just The Gore." As I said, traffic on
MyBayCity has tripled since the beginning of the year. In July, MBC logged more than 108,000 hits. That works out to well over 1,250,000 hits per year.
Moreover, this is historically the slow time of year for computer surfing since many families are travelling and vacationing during the summer months. This only makes our increase in readership even more impressive.
We're obviously doing something right. And justas obvious to me, YOU want to read about it.
So . . . spread the good news. Send MyBayCity to friends or relatives. Make a difference.
