SPYDELL, James Michael
Bay City, MI
James M. Spydell, age 59, died April 29, 2008. He was born on May 10, 1948 in Bay City to Virgil A. and Margaret E. (Steele) Spydell. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Era aboard the USS Concordia. He graduated from Delta College with an Associate of Arts degree. He was an artist.
He is survived by his son Paul Spydell, his mother Margaret E. Spydell, a brother Patrick M. (Joanne) Spydell, a sister Sherry A. (Ted) Aguirre, his nephews and nieces: Christie and Marc Aguirre and Blair, Gregory and Patrick Jr. Spydell and 2 great nieces and a great nephew. He was preceded in death by his father Virgil and a son Christopher.
A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home. Lay minister Linda Studniarz will preside. The family will greet friends on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Studio 23.
BASSETT, Robert George
Bay City, Michigan
Robert G. Bassett, age 64 years, died April 27, 2008. He was born in San Jose, CA.on November 9, 1943 to George Robert and Marjorie (White) Bassett.
He was retired from General Motors-Powertrain in Bay City. Bob served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed bowling, motor cycle riding and the casino.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary McKee, whom he married June 17, 1967. He also leaves His mother Marjorie Bassett, 3 brothers-in-law Bob (Doris) McKee, Dennis (Darlene) McKee and Mike (Helen) McKee, 2 sisters-in-law Jody (Jeff) Nashatka and Tami (Ron) Butterfield and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father George R. Bassett, a brother Ronald Bassett, a special aunt and uncle Virginia and Max Bloom, his mother-in-law Jenny Bayliss and a brother-in-law Gary McKee.
The Funeral Liturgy will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home. Sister Joanne Toohey will preside. The Rite of Committal will follow at Elm Lawn Cemetery with Military Rites by the Bay Co. Veterans Council. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or Visiting Nurses Services of Michigan. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
The family wishes to offer a special thanks to Bay Regional Medical Center 3 East and 4 West, to Dr. Chavali and Dr. Struble, to Bay Medical Care Facility 1 East and the Therapy Dept. and to Visiting Nurse Services of Michigan, especially Amy and to Dr. Parmer.
Janik, Grace M.
Bay City, Michigan
Grace M. Janik, age 83 years, died April 27, 2008 at Bay Special Care Hospital. She was born in Detroit, MI on January 21, 1925 to the late William and May (Beren) Gatlin.
Grace was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. She graduated from Detroit Institute of Technology. Prior to retirement she was employed by Pfizer as a scientist. She was a member of the National Ski Patrol.
She is survived by 3 nephews: Robert (Elaine) Callsen of S. Lyon, MI, Fred (Virginia) Callsen of Arizona and Donald (Alice) Callsen of Florida and a special friend Marjorie Underhill.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Fr. Michael Herman will officiate. Friends may visit at the Church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time. A luncheon reception will follow the service at the Church.
Remington, Newell H.
Bay City, Michigan
Newell H. Remington, age 91 years, died April 23, 2008 at Caretel Inns of America. He was born in Caro, MI to the late Howard and Lola (Hare) Remington.
He held a B.A.and M.A. from Central Michigan University and a M.A. from Michigan State University. He had further education at Carleton College, Western Michigan University, Delta College and the University of Minnesota. Newell served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the Training Officer at the Navy Reserve Center in Bay City. He was a teacher at Boyne City High School for 5 years and a teacher for 20 years at Bay City Central High School and served as Math Division Chair. He completed his career at Delta College where he taught 16 years, was Division Chair for 6 years and achieved the rank of Full Professor. He was a member of many education associations and received the AAUP Recognition Award in 1969. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the School Employees Credit Union, a former treasurer of the Bay Town Dance Club and member of the Central High School Sports Club. He was a member of the former Madison Ave. United Methodist Church and its choir and was currently a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Bay City Lodge No. 88 B.P.O.E. He was an avid golfer.
Newell is survived by his wife, Anne Remington, 4 sons: Michael (Carol) Remington, Dennis Remington, David (Mary) Remington and Bruce (Guzide) Remington, a daughter-in-law Janet Remington, 6 grandchildren: Amy (Andrew) Kraynak, Christopher (Meghan) Remington, Bryan, Jessica, Elizabeth and Tane Remington, 2 great grandchildren: Abigail and Aidan Remington and a sister Pearl McGeorge. He was preceded in death by his first wife Shirley H. Remington on March 2, 1992, 3 brothers James, William and Dorus Remington and 2 sisters Maxine Goodall and Wanda Remington.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William T. Hennessy will officiate. Burial will be at Elm Lawn Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Friday, May 16, 2008 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home and at the Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Delta College Foundation-Newell Remington Fund, Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Michigan Parkinson Foundation (www.parkinsonsmi.org), the American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (www.apdaparkinson.org) or a charity of the donor?s choice.
The family appreciates all the kindness shown to them and the wonderful care given to Newell by Caretel Inns of America and Hospice of Michigan.
MCGILLIVRAY, Ronald K.
Bay City, Michigan
Mr. Ronald Kenneth McGillivray, age 95 years, passed away Monday, April 07, 2008 at the Bay Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 18, 1912 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of the late Will and Jesse (McFarland) McGillivray.
Ron married the former Greta Ann Westborg in 1937 and she preceded him in death on September 27, 1997. Ron graduated from the University Of Michigan School of Engineering and was a licensed civil engineer. He as the Director of Community Development for the City of Bay City for many years and was responsible for the development of the riverfront.
Following retirement Ron was a board member and consultant for the Bay County Growth Alliance and was instrumental in the development of the Valley Center Technological Park. He was inducted into Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame in 1998. Ron was a longtime member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church.
Other memberships include: the Rotary Club of Bay City and a multiple level Paul Harris Fellow, Recreation Fishing Club (past president), the Tri-County Economics Club, Wenona Lodge No. 256 F. & A.M., and the Scottish Rite Bodies-Valley of Bay City.
Surviving family include his daughter, Ellen Sue (Edward) Tallant of Detroit and his grandchildren, Michelle of Chicago and Michael of Bay City. Ron was preceded in death by his son, Eric. Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeffery D. Weenink will officiate. Burial will be at Pinecrest Cemetery in Oscoda, Michigan.
The family will receive friends at the Penzien-Steele Funeral Home on Friday from 2:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Ron will lie instate at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the service time. Those desiring may make contributions to the First Presbyterian Church.
