Michigan State USBC Youth Bowling tournament kicked off last weekend here in Bay City.

Hosted by Monitor Lanes and Bay Lanes the tournament runs every weekend until May 3rd and 4th.

This tournament is a boon to local restaurants and motels as noted by tournament Co-Director Roger Shildroth of Grand Rapids, "were staying at Bay Valley and their full, and so is the Double Tree." This is a big tournament for those playing and the hosting city.

There are 954 teams registered from throughout the state that include 1703 doubles teams and 3406 singles competitors. 70 teams are registered from Bay City while Metro Detroit has the most entrants with 267 teams.

"Bay City is a great host City for this Tournament," said Co-Director Sharon Shildroth (Roger's wife), "we haven?t been here in eight years and this year we have 14 centers that never sent a team that are attending," she added.

"The Internet has helped as this is our first year using online registrations and 30% of those registered did so online," said Shildroth.

Anyone with a 21 game average is eligible to enter and for $8.00 per person per event with a $25.00 total fee, any junior from 5 years old to 21 can play in this state tournament.

Jayme Ruoff of battle Creek is one of the youngest bowlers in the tournament, he took a break to pose with his mom Trina Ruoff.

"We use the same lane conditions they do in the pros, although conditions change from the temperature outside or the humidity of all the people watching, every bowler has the same shot and sometimes it depends on the luck of the bowler," said local tournament Director Joe Ciszewski.

The Shildroth's have been directing this tournament for 26 years throughout the state. They own the unofficial tournament mascot, "Cricket," their twelve year old Pug that according to Roger, "many kids remember Cricket from year to year and some even come just to see the dog."

Unofficial Tournament mascot is Cricket, Roger and Sharon Shildroth's Pug.

Although this is a competitive tournament any junior with an average can enter as noted by the lowest average entered 18, as well as those more competitive bowlers as noted by the highest average entered of 235.

The highlight of the opening weekend had to have been the 300 game rolled by 21 year old Ben Hill at Monitor Lanes in the team competition.

Ben Hill of Marshall dazzled the crowd with the tournaments first 300 Game.
