The Bijou Orchestra presents a concert of spectacular virtuosity in a concert entitled MORE JOY OF SAX.

The performance takes place on Saturday, April 19 at 8:00pm in Bay City's State Theatre. The concert is sponsored by a grant OmniSource with additional support from The Michigan Council for Art and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Leo Najar, Artistic Director, said "About a year a half ago we presented a concert called I Love a Piano and The Joy of Sax. We featured several Bijou Orchestra members as soloists along with some brilliant orchestral favorites."

Najar continued, "I have heard a lot from people who really enjoyed that concert and in particular, I have heard that people like hearing the players as soloists. The name of the first concert was a combination of a favorite song from the 1930's and a popular self-help book of the early 70's. I decided that if the writer of the book could issue a sequel entitled More Joy.., so could we!"

Featured soloists for the concert include our artist in residence, Leslie Nicholas, clarinetist. As artist in residence, Nicholas has performed many workshops over the past three years in our elementary and secondary schools, so it is good to be able to feature him "in front" of the orchestra. Nicholas will play a popular Gershwin song known as Walking the Dog.

Another selection in the 1930's mode is a Tommy Dorsey standard called Getting Sentimental Over You. TBO trombonist John Upton is an avid collector of jazz and big band recordings of the era and of course Upton is partial to works by Dorsey. Upton has selected this arrangement because he thinks it will be particularly effective with our group.

The Bijou is graced by an outstanding string section. This concert will feature violinists Bill Milicevic and Kevin Horne, TBO violist and violinist Mark Mooningham, Najar in a reading of the concerto for four violins in b minor by Antonio Vivaldi. "A piece for four violins really stretches our resources," notes Najar. "It's an exciting piece and I know the audience is going to like it. The orchestra's cellist, Irina Tikhonova will perform one of the most familiar of all cello solos, "The Swan" from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint Saƫns.

In addition to the soloists, the orchestra will play popular favorites including Sabre Dance, Slavonic Dance in C Major by Dvorak, two rags by Scott Joplin, The Radetzky March and several other selections by John Philip Sousa and other popular composers.

All seats for the concert are reserved. Tickets for the concert are $30, $25 and $20 for adults, with student tickets available for $10.

New for this concert is a special upper balcony seat price. All tickets in the last five rows of the upper balcony are designated "Top Ten" and are available for just $10 to everybody.

Tickets and information available by calling the box office at (989) 892-4200. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.BijouOrchestra.org or purchased from the box office at 917 Washington Avenue, Bay City. Tickets are also available at the door.
