Beach Wellness Run/Walk Draws 300 Plus to Bay City State Recreation Area
2nd Annual Event Raises Funds for Beach Grooming

It was a grand day for a run or walk at the beach.
Organizers of the 2nd Annual Beach Wellness Run/Walk were overjoyed by a 50 percent increase in turnout, from 200 runners last year to over 300 this year.

"The turnout is great and we're glad that folks can get a look at the beach at Bay City State Recreation Area that is ready for warm weather swimming," said Kim Coonan, co-chair of the event along with Ernie Krygier.
Winner of the 10K race was Greg Thomas, 39, of Clio, in 37:13, followed by Ron Strachan, 43, Bay City, in 38:38.
Taking the plaque for winning the 5K run was 49-year-old Jeff Senkowski of Auburn with time of 18:30, with Cory Peterson, 38, of Alger coming in second at 18:45.
Female winners in the 10K run were Kelly Derocher, 29, Freeland, with time of 43:55, followed by Teresa Martin, 48, Freeland, at 48:51.

Female winners in the 5K walk were Jill Callahan, 31, Essexville, in with a time of 35:47, and Nancy Aguilar, 46, Bay City, at 37:09.
Male winners in the 5K walk were William Thompson, 57 Harrisville, 33:49; and Jim Hughes, 60, Bay City, 35:39.
Age group winners in the 10K run were: 1-14 Female, Hannah Cobley, 14, Essexville, 52:07; 20-29 male, Stephen Besson, 25, 47:32; 30-39 male, James Felton, Saginaw, 38:59; 30-39 female, April Wendt, 1:05:27; 40-49 male, Greg Mills, Bellaire, 42:04; 40-49 female, Diane Konwinski, 43, Pinconning, 49:57; 50-59 male, Tim Flues, 59, Munger, 41:56; 50-59 female, Lynette Heinlein, 51, Vassar, 49:35; and 60-69 male, Leonard Block, 65, 52:12.

The organizers, both Bay County commissioners, said all proceeds from the run/walk will go toward beach grooming. Race proceeds will be added to $9,231 raised earlier from donations.
Donors to the 2008 grooming program include: the Save Our Shoreline group, $1,201; Catholic Federal Credit Union, $1,000; Chemical Bank, $400, Bay Regional Medical Center, $300;
Donations of $250 each were received from Covenant Health Care, Independent Bank, Schisler & Schisler Law Firm and Wirt Stone Dock;
The group also received $200 donations from Bay Area 7-11s, Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Boilermakers & Blacksmiths Local 169, attorney Brian Elder, Consumers Energy, COPOCO Credit Union, Financial Edge Credit Union, Firehouse Soft Wash, Gary Warner & Sons Electric, Gatsby's Saloon, Graff Chevrolet, Hagen Ford, IBEW Local 1098, Laborers Local 1098, McDonalds (Larry & Diane Peters), Meijer's Inc., Mid-Michigan Wellness Foundation, MMR (Mobile Medical Response), Mulligan's Pub, Nicole Couto Realtors, Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 85, Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local 7, Bier Garten, Thumb National Bank, United Bay Community Credit Union. Vaughn Begick, county commissioner, gave $30.
In-kind contributions were received from the Bay City Times, advertising; Bay Regional Medical Center,20 cases of water, emergency vehicle; Bay Screen Printing & Graphics, discount on cost of t-shirts; Coca Cola - Bay City,10 cases Coke products; Eberhard & Father Signworks, posters, signs, etc.; Krogers, Inc., bananas & apples; MMR, bike patrol; Pepsi Cola - Tri-County Area, 10 cases Pepsi products; Runners Store, 4104 E. Wilder Road, 2 pair shoes & $300 gift certificate.
