Pinconning Township is on the move.

A grant of $635,000 and a low interest loan of $1,890,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will help Pinconning Township install a new sanitary sewer system and boost development from I-75 east into the city limits.

Gene DeRossett, USDA rural development director for Michigan, presented a check for $2,525,000 to Supervisor Sharon Stalsberg recently to jump start the project.

While the project will serve more than 90 residential and commercial customers, it will also make service available for commercial expansion in the Downtown Development Area near the McDonald's Restaurant, said Ms. Stalsberg.

There has been interest on the part of investors for some time in building a hotel or motel and other businesses near the expressway, she said, although no permits have yet been pulled.

The new sewer will serve subdivisions north of Pinconning Road such as Center Drive, Riverside Meadows and Senton Subdivision, the township supervisor said.

The area already has water and now will be set for consideration of development projects, she said.

Interest in Pinconning has been parked by the recent opening of the Chippewa Casino on Worth Road in Arenac Township, Arenac County.

Also, reportedly planned tribal projects such as a marina on Saginaw Bay and rumored passenger rail service to the casino from the southeastern part of the state, have buoyed hopes for additional growth in the Pinconning area.

Meanwhile, Buena Vista Charter Township received a $9 million loan for upgrades to its sewer system that will repair cracked pipes and prevent untreated wastewater from entering the Saginaw River. The upgrades will serve about 2,500 residential and commercial customers, township officials said.

The Earth Day check presentations brought out representatives of a host of public officials, Jason Wadaga, of State Rep. Tim Moore's staff; Mary Washington, representing U.S. Sen. Carl Levin; Chris Hennessey, former Bay City commissioner, now with U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow in Flint; Lori Sheltrown, with U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, and Jeanne Henry, of State Sen. Jim Barcia's staff.

"Earth Day is about protecting the environment for future generations to enjoy," said Mr. DeRossett. "These new water and sewer systems will protect the ground water, which benefits local residents and surrounding wildlife." ###
