Stem Cells - What are they? What's their function?

And why is there such controversy about their use?

Every one has heard about stem cell research in the media. But do you really understand what stem cells are and what their function or purpose is - And why is their such controversy about their use?

I am not a doctor or a scientist. I am not going to use big fancy technical terms. When you are finished reading this you should have a clear, but general, understanding about stem cells and why they are so important to your good health.

So, let's talk stem cells!


Stem cells are the only known source for rebuilding the body and renewing health by restoring lost or degraded cells.

The National Institute of Health defines stem cells this way:

"Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. Serving as a sort of repair system for the body, they can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell or a brain cell."

I'm sure most of you have heard of embryonic stem cells.

The media has given much publicity to these little guys. But, how many of you know about Adult Stem Cells?

Just to be clear, I'll try to explain the differences.

Embryonic Stem Cells begin their life at conception where they divide repeatedly until they begin to differentiate (or change), becoming specific types of cells that will form different body parts. Stem cells are called embryonic from conception until birth, at which time they become Adult Stem Cells.

We hear so much about embryonic stem cells. The reason for that is because they are much more easily manipulated in the laboratory than Adult stem cells.

Embryonic stem cells also carry with them Ethical issues as well as aberration issues (developing unwanted tissues).

Adult Stem Cells don't seem to share these issues.

Stem cells are called adult stem cells from the time of birth until death and they are fully capable of differentiating through out their entire life cycle.

The National Institute of Health identifies 74 treatable diseases using adult stem cells in therapy. These costly and complex therapies typically deliver a massive quantity of adult stem cell to the area undergoing treatment. Most require that stem cells be harvested from the patient or an adult donor. The stem cells must then be programmed in a lab to become a specific type of cell and then injected into the body. For treatment of disease these therapies are the best method of recovery, producing truly remarkable results. But, most of us don't have health issues that require these extensive procedures.

For those of us just wanting to maintain optimal health or address the effects of aging, injury, or day to day wear and tear, a smaller but steady release of our existing stem cells into the bloodstream can produce considerable health benefits.

Some of the things stem cells are known to do include: Forming cartilage and bone - maintaining bone mineral density - improving nerve conduction velocity - forming neuronal tissue - generating new neurons within the human brain - forming liver, skin and digestive tract cells as well as renewing cardiac tissue, muscle tissue, pancreatic tissue, lung tissue and gastrointestinal tissue.

Stem cells can help rebuild or repair all of these tissues and more.

Theoretically, this is how it works.

The stem cell theory of renewal proposes that stem cells are naturally released by the bone marrow and travel via the bloodstream toward tissues to promote the body's natural process of renewal. When an organ is subjected to a process that requires renewal, such as the natural aging process, this organ releases compounds that trigger the release of stem cells from the bone marrow.

The organ also releases compounds that attract stem cells to this organ. The released stem cells then follow the trail of these compounds, kind of like a bloodhound chasin' a coon. They leave the blood circulation to migrate to the organ where they proliferate, dividing and multiplying, and differentiate into cells of this organ, supporting the natural process of renewal.

Dr. David A. Prentice is one of the USA's leading experts in adult stem cell science and a professor at Indiana University School of Medicine. The National Institutes of Health fund much of his research. In 2003 he presented a detailed paper to the President's Council on Bioethics. In closing his presentation he added these powerful statements:

Adult stem cells "have significant capabilities for growth, repair, and regeneration of damaged cells and tissues in the body, akin to a built-in repair kit or maintenance crew that only needs activation and stimulation to accomplish repair of damage."

And that...

"Direct stimulation of endogenous (already present in the body) adult stem cells within a tissue may be the easiest, safest, and most efficient way to stimulate tissue regeneration. Such stimulation need not rely on any added stem cells."

Adult stem cells are the best anti-aging system ever known.

Knowing what stem cells do in the body - doesn't it make sense that having more of them in your bloodstream will undoubtedly have profound effects on your health and well-being.
