The Bay City business community would see a $3.2 million expansion in a project to be reviewed Tuesday by Bay County Commissioners.

The development would be located at 1322 Washington Avenue, near Woodside, that is now home to three leasing companies, ACG Leasing and Express Leasing, of Bay City, and CDW Leasing of Portland, Oregon.

Allison Short is the representative of the firm, Calgary Co. LLC that has made application to the county for tax breaks on the development.

The firm's application states it will be involved in software development for the transportation industry under the name Transit Solutions LLC and will employ 105 persons.

Besides an estimated $2.2 million in computer equipment, the firm estimates it will spend $1 million on building renovations.

Through the City of Bay City, Calgary seeks an Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Act (OPRA) district exemption for $1 million.

An Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption (IFTE) District is sought by Transit Solutions LLC for $2.2 million for computer equipment to be housed in the rehabilitated warehouse building.

The firms applied April 23 for the exemptions and the city has scheduled a public hearing May 19 at 7:30 p.m. on the proposal.

The filing states the firms will start the project in fall, 2008 and complete in spring, 2009. The project is listed as "major renovation of a warehouse to be used as an office, computer wiring, electrical updates, heating and air conditioning for office spaces, plumbing for restrooms and break areas, partitions to create offices, lighting fixtures, ceilings, new flooring, and possibly windows for natural lighting.

Current tax valuation of the building is $366,570, plus small amounts of personal property tax valuations.

The new development is a successor to Short Freight Lines, Inc., of Bay City, founded in 1932 by Raymond Holis Short, Sr. and incorporated in 1947. During its year history the firm has remained family-owned, and is managed by the second and third generations of the Short Family. Other company terminals and offices are located in Toledo, Ohio and Birch Run, Michigan. Short Freight Lines, Inc.'s area of operation stretches throughout all of the continental United States and Ontario, Canada.

Go-To Transport, Inc. was established in 2003 "by siblings who are the third generation to be involved in the transportation industry." Officials of the firm include Gary L. Short and Ben Calvin, in addition to Allison Short.

Go-To has 300 trucks, including "sprinter vans," and 800 trailers on the road plus 250 employees and owner-operators. The firm's promotional material states:

"Go-To Transport is a premier full truckload carrier specializing in the seamless movement of customer freight. Headquartered in Bay City, Michigan, Go-To Transport, helps customers in an array of industries exceed their transportation goals. These industries range from automotive and chemical to print and consumer goods.

"In addition, Go-To Transport trucks move freight throughout the 48 contiguous states and Canada. Go-To Transport also specializes in logistics. Our logistics department helps our customers increase their product visibilty by integrating information, technology, and transportation.

"At Go-To Transport our mission statement guides our daily operation: To provide quality transportation and distribution services to customers who want to develop a partnership with a responsive, innovative, results oriented company."#
