Sharron Hetzel, executive director of Studio 23, shows one of the modernistic paintings on display until Jun 15.

Currently on display at Studio 23/The Arts Center, 901 N. Water St., is part of a corporate collection of contemporary prints loaned by local stockbroker Karl Roth through the A.G. Edwards Corporation

. The exhibit runs May 15 through June 15 at the downtown Bay City studio and features 35 etchings, lithographs and serigraphs.

Several hundred persons have already viewed the exhibit, that is proving to be very popular, said Mr. Roth.

Etching is a process where acid is used to create a design on a metal plate; lithographs are produced through a process in which an image is drown on porous limestone or stone, and serigraphs involve a stencil process of printmaking where ink is forced through mesh and onto a printing surface.

A Museum Exhibition - Impressions on Paper, features artistic renderings like Andy Warhol's "Apple," Robert Motherwell's "Razor's Edge," Dennis Ashbaugh's "Genetic Portrait" and Roy Litchenstein's "Still Life."

Lichtenstein was among the pioneers of Pop Art in the 1950s and '60s, composing his early paintings of stylized comic book scenes with Benday dots used in commercial printing.

Other art in the exhibit is by Robert Cottingham, internationally renowned as one of America's most important photo-realist painters. He is most noted for works like Hawk Eye, an old-fashioned camera crisply silhouetted against a saturated red ground.

Ed Paschke, another whose work is exhibited here, was one of a renegade group of students at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1960s. He received national attention as an essential player among the confrontational Chicago "Imagists." Paschke's more recent work incorporates electronic media depicting enlarged images of such icons as George Washington, Elvis Presley and the Mona Lisa.

A familiar name, Andy Warhol, also is among artists exhibited here. Warhol's exposure to commercial art in his work as an advertising illustrator inspired his subject matter, including Campbell's Soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles. Warhol uses lithography and screen printing as the basis for his creative expression.

Other highlights of the exhibition include abstract prints by Helen Frankenthaler, collages documenting various Christo projects, and minimalist prints by Sol Le Witt and Ellsworth Kelly.

The artwork comes to Studio 23/The Arts Center from the A.G. Edwards/Wachovia Securities corporate Art Collection. The collection created in 1967 and spans more than 200 years and highlights more than 4,200 works by noted American and European artists. The artwork currently hangs in the corporate offices of A.G. Edwards/Wachovia Securities in St. Louis.

"A show like this is not something that comes together overnight; it's a process that takes a couple of years to achieve. It is very generous for a corporation to lend this work out," said gallery curator Patti Sharrard.

"The exhibit is sponsored by the Bay City office of A.G. Edwards/Wachovia Securities, with a special thank you to Karl Roth, manager of the Bay City office who has helped to make this exhibit possible," said Ms. Sharrard.

"Even those of us unfamiliar with this aspect of American art will enjoy a dynamic and captivating experience viewing this exhibit," said Ms. Sharrard.

The exhibit will be open for public viewing from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. There is no charge, but donations are welcome.###
