Bay County Clerk Cynthia Luczak shows their earliest marriage records

The County Clerk offers 17 different ceremonies to choose from

People go to the Bay County Building for a number of reasons.

Birth and death certificates, new business names, passports, gun permits, voter registration and genealogy are just a few of the things that bring people downtown.

The County Clerk's office works with the Board of Commissioners and is mainly responsible for elections. The office holds records as far back as 1857.

And, as of recently, there is yet another reason people may want to look to the County Building.

The County Clerk, Cynthia Luczak, can now officiate at marriages.

As of January 2008, County Clerks are in the same category as Judges, Mayors, Magistrates (Justices of the Peace) and Ship Captains. The County Clerk' Association lobbied for the change, says Ms. Luczak. They believed that since they are designees of the court, they should have that authority, considering there are those less qualified that can perform marriages.

Unfortunately, the County Clerk's new power hasn't had much exposure. Luczak has only performed one ceremony so far. "It was great," she says. However, one County Clerk in Michigan has officiated at upward of 1000 marriages. Luczak hopes that as a devoted public servant she will be in greater demand once more people are aware that they can look to the County Building for the bond of matrimony.

Seventeen different ceremonies are offered, ranging from simple vows to the real tearjerkers. Each ceremony costs $25, and for an extra $15, the three-day waiting period can be waived. The entire ceremony could actually be performed within an hour of filling out the marriage license. For instance, if a groom-to-be receives a call to ship out for Iraq in 36 hours, the couple could still be married beforehand. Luczak says, "I'm looking forward to offering this service. I'm glad the state law was changed for our citizens to have [more choices]."

Cynthia Luczak has been our Bay County Clerk for five years and will be running unopposed for another four years.
