Men's Bay City softball is enjoying a flood of new players.

With 47 slow pitch teams playing in seven leagues some of those teams are first year teams with little experience.

Just as the modified "C" league is the testing waters for the more up-tempo game so is the Western league in slow pitch.

Russell and Daniel Roznowski are first year players for "The Frame," in the Western League.

Russel Roznowski of first year team "The Frame," had this to say about his foray into recreation softball at Vet's, "I don't think we won a game yet, but who cares were out here to have fun," "we didn't even know what position anyone was going to play or who could pitch, but here we are anyway," he added.

His team was formed by his church group where baseball was not a prerequisite and sometimes it shows as two of his outfielders ran in on a pop fly that went over their heads.

Softball at Vets is for fun but it is nice to win a few, unfortunately for "The Frame," learning can be a humbling experience as they are 0-4 and have been outscored 63-3 before the action this week.

On the positive side of their Wednesday game, they were playing the winless Stretch's crew in Western League action. Someone has to win, "The Frame," is still winless.

"I'll bet modified is more fun, it seems like a quicker game," queried Roznowski, after I informed him I played in the modified "C" league.

"Keep learning the game at this level first, my modified team is made up of two year league Champions in slow pitch and they all made the jump pretty good," I replied.

And so it goes down at Vets, if a team wins it's respective league the following year they get automatically moved up to the next higher league.

Eventually when a team is ready they enter the state tournament at the end of the regular season and test their metal against other teams in their class from throughout Michigan.

Then there are the many tournaments where teams can venture out of their comfort zone of familiar opponents and see if they are as good as they think they are.

The parity and competition is good down at Vet's and that's why so many people play.
