State Theatre is quickly becoming main venue for cultural events in downtown Bay City.

Local patrons of the arts have another outstanding opportunity to rub elbows with the "glitterati" of the community and support preservation of an important historic treasure.

The Taste and Theatrics of Bay City is scheduled Thursday, Sept. 4, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., under the Big Top at the State Theatre. Goal of the sponsors is to have 300 attendees at $25 per ticket, thus raising a gross of $7,500.

The State Theatre is fast becoming one of Bay City's top cultural venues as hometo the new Bijou Orchestra and and variety of musical and theatrical performances which position it as our own little "Broadway."

The coming event is touted as "a new downtown Bay City event that will showcase cuisines and specialty delicacies."

Vendors of hors d' oeuvres such as The Lantern, Gatsby's, the Wanigan, Old City Hall and Bay City Coffee and Tea will host tasting stations inside the big tent beginning at 6 p.m. Beer and wine will be provided by C. Riffel & Sons.

"Yes, we will be producing a great new event to raise awareness of the culinary and cultural assets of our community, while raising funds to help restore the historic State Theatre," says arts maven Kathy Czerwinski.

A 45-minute theatrical program will take place inside the theatre from 7-7:45 p.m. Following the program a dessert and coffee station will be open from 7:45 - 8:30 p.m. The entire event is proclaimed "a celebration of culinary delights and cultural significance."

Supporters stress the architectural significance of the State Theatre, originally called the Bijou when built in 1908. The style, notes architectural historian Dale Wolicki, is typically referred to as "Exotic Art Deco," popular early in the 20th century for large theatres.

Architect C. Howard Crane, who designed the Fox Theatre and Orchestra Hall in Detroit, used the art of the lost Mayan race as the decoration motif when he redesigned the masterpiece in 1930. The magnificent theatre was renamed the "Bay" and topped with a tall sign resembling a Mayan in colorful headdress.

One of the few remaining Mayan themed theatres in the United States, the architectural treasure is being restored and preserved by the cooperative efforts of the Friends of the State Theatre, the Bay Area Community Foundation and the Bay Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
