The mission of the American Red Cross--to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies--will be front and center in Bay City on June 11.

On that evening, the East Shoreline Chapter of the American Red Cross will be celebrating lives saved through the extraordinary acts of "Heroes Among Us." The stories of ten local heroes will be told as awards are presented to them. Each of the heroes acted with courage and determination, some placing their own safety at risk, in order to save the life of another. Their stories are an inspiration to all of us.

Michael Bowers is a young man with a development disability. While at work in Arenac County, Michael used his CPR training to save the life of a co-worker who had stopped breathing due to an asthma attack.

Jeanette Esterhai witnessed the collapse of an elderly man at a funeral luncheon in Essexville. She came to his rescue, determined that he was choking, and used the Heimlich Maneuver to clear his airway and save his life.

Bob Winkel of Harbor Beach has been saving lives for years through blood donations. He started giving blood as a teenager and has been pumping red gold ever since. The Red Cross records show more than 19 gallons, but Bob thinks his teen-aged and military donations put him well above that.

Maegan Rauch Schneeberger of Tuscola County used her training in Infant CPR to save the life of a 3-week-old baby who had stopped breathing. When paramedics arrived, the baby was again breathing on her own.

Anthony Peter was a Pinconning police officer when he went into a burning mobile home to rescue the resident, before the fire department arrived. He crawled through the home, holding his breath, and pulled the unconscious man to safety.

Kelsey Lipinski is a 9th grader at Garber High School in Essexville. Her mom suffered from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that had not responded to medical treatment. Kelsey donated bone marrow stem cells to save her mother's life. Mom and daughter are doing well. Amy Dore heard about a co-worker who had been suffering in silence for years with kidney disease and badly needed a transplant. They weren't related, were not even friends. Amy gave him one of her kidneys, just because it was the right thing to do.

Wings of Mercy East Michigan, a non-profit organization that flies seriously ill patients to hospitals for treatment at no charge, recently celebrated its 1,000th mission. Volunteer pilots Bob Munley of Bay City and Cody Welch of Linden will accept the award.

Ben & Jan Zurvalec of Auburn made it their personal mission to ensure that Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) are widely available in Bay County after losing a young son to sudden cardiac arrest. Their efforts led to the purchase and placement of AEDs throughout the county.

TI Automotive of Tuscola County receives the Corporate Hero Award for implementing a program in each of its facilities across the country to reduce cardio-vascular disease and to improve the health and fitness of its employees. The program produced significant improvements in a number of key indicators.

One of these heroes will also receive the "People's Choice Award" based on voting by readers of The Bay City Times. More information about our heroes and their stories can be found on our website, www.redcross-esc.org.

The East Shoreline Chapter serves Arenac, Bay, Huron and Tuscola Counties with disaster relief, military communications, and lifesaving training courses. All four counties are represented among the heroes being honored.

The event is a fundraiser for the Red Cross. It will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel, beginning with cocktails at 6 pm, dinner at 6:30 pm, and the hero presentations at 7:30 pm. State Representative Jeff Mayes will be Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

Guests will enjoy the music of the North Union Dixieland Band during dinner. Tickets are $35 each. A patron ticket for $250 provides two tickets to the event and a $190 tax-deductible donation to the Red Cross. Tickets are available through the chapter's website or by calling 989-892-1541.

Bay Regional Medical Center is the primary sponsor of the event, with The Bay City Times and Maier & Associates also sponsoring.
