Labor Day - It's A Tradition

Labor Day memories . . .

Labor Day used to be a very special holiday for me.

It meant next weekend was the opening of college football, back to school was right around the corner, let's pack up for that last camping trip, last summer vacation travel opportunity, fall is in the air, etc., etc.

These are just a few on a long list of memories of 'The Way We Were.' . . . or at least the way I think we were.

Check out these links for the way it used to be.

History of Labor Day, Labor Day Observances, My Favorite - Annie's Labor Day

FAST FORWARD 2003 - Labor Day 2003 seems to have a bit of a different spin on it for me. My daughter went back to school (high school senior) on August 20. My son (college sophomore) returned to college on August 22 - just two days later.

Hey! School Board People! Get a Grip on this schedule thing!

Summer's short enough. There's still only 180 days of school no matter when you schedule them. There's no need to push the school year start date back into mid August so that we can have twenty-two days vacation at Easter. Good Grief! Who's making the call on this anyway? The high school kids didn't get out of school until mid-June.

Remember when football was a fall sport. Not Anymore! The NFL has pushed its two-bit, non-sensical, pre-season, pretend-game garbage right into the middle of my worst ever Detroit Tiger baseball season. (20-game losers and all).

I got summer stuff to takecare of. I need to keep track of the Yankees and the Red Sox and that darn Bambino Curse thing and instead I'm inundated with NFL injury reports and orchestrated quarterback controversies - Is this the year that Mike Vick got hurt? Or was that last year? And when is the Michigan-Notre Dame game anyway? Did I miss it? When's the NFL Draft?

I'm having a heck of a time concentrating on fun stuff because there's way too much important stuff to keep straight. Is Kobe in jail yet? Isn't Agassi olderthan Sampras? And doesn't Andre have two kids with Steffi? Why is Pete retiring and Andre's rated Number One? And did anyone else notice that Jimmy Connors was a no-show?Whatever happened to that flashy, young, black golfer . . . I think his name wasTiger Woods. Nice kid but . . . ya know it just couldn't last. Does anyone know who won the Bay County Golf Tournament this year? Has a woman won a man's golf tournament yet? Why don't the men try to qualify for the women's golf tournaments? Would the men play off the shorter tees?

Salmon season used to start in mid-September. Now it starts on August 1st. I blame that totally on the internet. There's just way too much information out there and it's just too easy for just anybody to get their hands on it. (There are no secrets.) Do you think Joe Schmo is going to be really mad when he finds out? When is the Great Lakes water going to return to "normal" levels? Why does bottled water cost more than gasoline? And just where in the heckdid the Flying Carp come from, anyway?

I gotta go buy gas today. I'm taking the afternoon off 'cuz I know there's going to be a long line. It's Labor Day weekend. I got lots of fun stuff to do before Tuesday.

I think that makes Thanksgiving next week.
