Mitchell Rivard Awarded $500 Scholarship as Outstanding Young Volunteer

Rotary banners, 491 of them, from all over the world now are able to be displayed -- thanks to Super Rotarian Barb Fisher.

Ms. Fisher won great acclaim last week at Rotary for her year-long labor of love, repairing, cleaning and organizing all the banners the club has received over the years.

In years past the banners (more properly called trading flags) were mounted on large felt sheets for display. Ten years ago the banners were displayed weekly, hung around the room at the Holiday Inn meeting room. When that practice ended and the banners were rolled up and stored in a plastic trash can then pulled out for things like International Night.

Barb took the tattered and wrinkled flags, cleaned them up, smoothed them out, then repaired or replaced the gold trimmed blue display banners. She installed new dowels and carefully rolled them for more appropriate storage.

Unfortunately, we don't know when the banners were received or who gave them to the club, except for one that was brought in recent years by Gary M. "Gus" Gallagher, former Bay Cityan and a frequent visitor from Washington, D.C.

The entire collection of flags is on the Club web site at http://www.rotarybaycity.org/rot-0312.cfm. You can find banners by name or you can click the "next flag". This is probably the only place in the world that such a large collection of rotary flags is on public display.

Seeing all the attractive and interesting banners, President Rob Clark and other Rotarians decided to redesign the large banner of the Rotary Club of Bay City. Mike Stoner has volunteered to head the redesign committee, also comprised of Cindy Chadwick, Kathy Dwyer, Rod Sundstrom and John Callahan.

The club honored Mitchell Ryan Rivard, Western High graduate, for being the top young volunteer with a $500 scholarship toward his continuing education. Rivard did 1026 hours of community service during his high school career. He will attend Michigan State University to study political theory and constitutional democracy.

Don Carlyon and his entire family came to the meeting in honor of Don and Betty's wedding anniversary. The family all got together and made a contribution to the Rotary Foundation in Betty's honor and she was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship... much to her surprise!

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Reminder that DUES INVOICES have been mailed for the six month period of July through December 2008.

Brian Kay reported a final profit of $7,691 for the golf outing fund raiser! Great job Brian. Next year the event will be chaired by Tim Holsworth and Hratch Basmadjian, with Brian giving advice and support.

Rob's Big Finish. To cap off a really remarkable Rotary year, President Rob has set just a few more goals and tasks for the club, which he had the chair persons describe.

Deb Lutz is heading the polio plus final drive to raise $13,000 over three years. She introduced a thermometer poster which showed we're almost half way done in the first few weeks! (Incoming District Governor Bob Chadwick was impressed since few other clubs have even started and Bay City's goal is almost half of the entire district's goal!)

Chuck Cusick announced a tentative international project involving adopting a village in Guatemala and providing schooling and other services to Mayan children.

Anne Trahan is working on the Family of Rotary appreciation dinner next Tuesday. Everyone be sure to attend and bring your family!

Linda Heemstra will be chairing a program to send text books to Ishrar's school in Afghanistan.

Larry LaPorte will chair a search for a non-Rotarian in the community who exemplifies the ideals of Rotary. A new "Spirit of Paul Harris" award will be presented to this person.
