What does the Hillary-Obama lovefest in Unity, New Hampshire tell us?

Sitting here in mid-Michigan, we don't get all the political news hot off the ticker.

But now and then we pick up a vibration. For example, the recent Hillary-Obama lovefest in Unity, New Hampshire, should tell us all the game is afoot, the dance has begun, the bird is in the air, etc., etc.

It appears that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are fated to be on the same ticket.

The reason: John McCain is closing fast, and he doesn't even have a presumptive running mate.

And, the 527 attack ad groups haven't yet launched their vicious propaganda, at least on television. We all know it is coming, like the swift-boating of John Kerry and, yes, the totally untrue charges by fellow Republicans in Texas that McCain fathered a black child with a prostitute that sunk his chances in the 2000 GOP primary against GWBush. (The truth is that McCain and his wife had ADOPTED a girl from Bangladesh who appears black.)

The Democrats don't have the luxury of shooing aside Hillary and of course, Bill, and picking a strong male figure to bolster the defense element of the team, like Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia or former Republican senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.

A well-placed Washington source from the Obama campaign told this columnist that the second spot on the ticket "is Hillary's if she wants it."

As we theorized before, she might opt for the first appointment to the Supreme Court, should Obama get elected, gaining her a posh lifetime job that would allow her to free herself from any messy domestic ties should that be her wish (if you know what I mean.)

An Obama/Clinton ticket would be a wonder, given their acrimony during the extended primary season. Former Presidential aide David Gergen quipped that if Hillary became vice president Obama "would have to have a taster." The implication being, of course, that she would be constantly seeking to supplant the first black President and might go to any lengths to achieve the higher office.

As hard as it is to swallow those wild suppositions, the reality of the last days of the Bush Administration, if they ever actually come, may be even more gruesome. And so may be the aftermath of the Bush regime.

C-Span recently aired an interview about Bush proclaiming an emergency policy that would amount to a virtual dictatorship. In other words, in the event of a terrorist attack, he could, by his own fiat, suspend the results of the election and remain in power to meet the emergency.

Last year President Bush signed a directive granting extraordinary powers to the office of the president in the event of a declared national emergency, apparently without congressional approval or oversight. The "National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive" was signed May 9, 2007 notes Jerome R. Corsi in a WorldNetDaily column.

It was issued with the dual designation of NSPD-51, as a National Security Presidential Directive, and HSPD-20, as a Homeland Security Presidential Directive.

The directive establishes under the office of the president a new national continuity coordinator whose job is to make plans for "National Essential Functions" of all federal, state, local, territorial and tribal governments, as well as private sector organizations to continue functioning under the president's directives in the event of a national emergency.

"Catastrophic emergency" is loosely defined as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions."

(See the interview by Brian Lamb of C-Span with conservative columnist Dr. Jerome Corsi on YouTube, entitled Bush/Cheney to Attempt Possible Coup)

"The President has taken onto himself powers that don't have a basis in the Constitution," said Corsi.

He said both conservatives and liberals have deep concerns about several of the President's recent actions. Another area noted by Corsi was the establishment of economic ties with the European Union, done without Congressional approval or notification, he said.

Corsi also reported on the same site that, in a ceremony that received virtually no attention in the American media, the United States and Canada signed a military agreement Feb. 14 allowing the armed forces from one nation to support the armed forces of the other nation during a domestic civil emergency, even one that does not involve a cross-border crisis.

U.S. Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, commander of USNORTHCOM, signed the agreement Feb. 14, 2008, with Canadian Air Force Lt. Gen. Marc Dumais, commander of Canada Command.

The agreement, defined as a Civil Assistance Plan, was not submitted to Congress for approval, nor did Congress pass any law or treaty specifically authorizing this military agreement to combine the operations of the armed forces of the United States and Canada in the event of a wide range of domestic civil disturbances ranging from violent storms, to health epidemics, to civil riots or terrorist attacks.

In Canada, the agreement paving the way for the militaries of the U.S. and Canada to cross each other's borders to fight domestic emergencies was not announced either by the Harper government or the Canadian military, prompting sharp protest.

The possibility of post-Presidential prosecution also has been raised. Super-cop Vincent Bugliosi is out with a book entitled "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder." He's deadly serious, has lots of prosecutors from local jurisdictions behind him, and the book already has shot to No. 12 on the New York Times bestseller list.

The crime charged is because Bush is believed, by Bugliosi at least, to have lied to the American people about the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Because of those actions, Americans have died and the prosecutor alleges that was murder.

Whether Bugliosi will get any traction on that accusation, or whether Bush, if charged, will swiftly be pardoned by a President McCain or a President Obama, remains, of course, to be seen.

It looks like we're in for another exciting political ride, shades of the 2000 and 2004 elections. What a country! ###
