Dion Mindykowski is pleased with local interest in his publication to date

People can't pronounce it but they are going to be reading it.

The inaugural issue of the locally published Paradidomi Review is set for release this September 24, 2003. A 52-page journal, the publication features seventeen Mid-Michigan writers, many of whom reside locally.

The bi-annual magazine is co-edited by Bay City-native Dion Mindykowski.

The idea for the publication was sparked by Mindykowski's departure from academia. A recent Saginaw Valley State University graduate, he was parted from the writing community at school and had to seek alternative ways of interacting with other writers.

"I noted the potential for a growing arts community in this area, as well as a number of aesthetic needs, especially in theareas of writing and literature," said Mindykowski recently. "The best place to start was a publication that would feature established locals, along with up-and-coming writers."

The publication's title is Greek and means "betrayal." It represents the Editors' belief that a writer's language will betray them if he/she does not hone their craft through interactions with other writers and participation in cultural dialogues.

The publication's philosophy is based on social constructivist writing theories popularized by developmental psychologists Piaget and Vygotsky.

A "teaching publication," Paradidomi staff members offer feedback on all work submitted for consideration. Although Mindykowski knows that many people think that goal is an unrealistic one, he believes that it is necessary for the publication to be able to achieve its utlimate goal of equipping all aspiring writers with the tools to succeed in the literary world.

With the creation and development of a literary publication, a small press to publish it was quickly formed by Mindykowski as well. Dwells in Attics Press is a subsidiary of Uniting a Creative Culture (UCC), another new arts organization, which is dedicated to filling aesthetic gaps in communities and encouraging collaboration among artists.

UCC is also a Mindykowski brain child.

"When this organizationwas in the planning stages, I was already thinking big, imagining the potential for old farm houses to be converted into performance, gallery, and office space. Lately, I've been eyeing the abandoned storefronts in Bay City's growing downtown. Apart from an arts complex, I'd would like to see more artists of mixed mediums collaborating, the development of unique educational programs, and the availability of more events that cater to an artistically and culturally driven nightlife as a result of the organization's efforts," commented Mindykowski.

Copies of the inaugural issue of the Paradidomi Review will be available for sale at Bay City Coffee and Tea, located at 810 Saginaw St. in downtown Bay City, on September 24, 2003 from 6:00-10:00 p.m. Many of the issue's contributors will be on hand to read their work for the special Post-Publication Event.

A jam band comprised of local musicians who regularly support the Press's efforts may also be performing this evening.

"I'm pleasantly surprised by the support that's been given (from the community) thus far. Along with a large number of submissions and good turn outs for our readings, we have also received many flattering compliments from people who have sneaked a peek at the inaugural issue of the magazine," said a smiling Mindykowski.

Current partners for his arts organizations' include Tri-City SER, the Bay Arts Council, Bay CityCoffee and Tea, and the Saginaw Valley State University Rustbelt Roethke Writers' Conference.

Ordering information for the Paradidomi Review, and details on Mindykowski's other arts organizations, may also be requested by visiting the Press's new website.
