Got plans for the 4th of July? (It's a Friday)

At noon, I know where I'm going to be . . . Right in front of my Hi-Def television . . . watching the Annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest (Coney Island) on ESPN.

If you're making that "stupid face" then I'm sure you've never taken the time to get involved in food eating contests. (But in your heart, you know you want to try it once before you die.)

Locally, we have the B & C Pizza Challenge.

I truly love B&C Pizza. They have one store on M-15 (East Side) and one store on State St.(West Side) ------ NOT THOSE BC PIZZA GUYS.

Scott Satek's B & C Pizza has the "Party Pizza Challenge." If you can eat the whole thing in an hour . . . you get the pizza free plus a cash prize.

I always wanted to give it a go. I admit, the pizza's huge. But hey, it's a win-win situation for everyone. And really . . . how bad could it be?

But back to the Hot Dog Contest . . .

The 2008 event is scheduled for July 4, 2008 at 12 p.m. EDT. It will be televised live on ESPN.

I watched it for the first time last year during television breaks in coverage of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. Click Here To Read My 2007 Column.

Actually . . . here's all you gotta know about last year -- It's the contestants OTHER than the main guys -- Joey Chestnut and the oriental wannabe, Kobayashi.

Last year, Joey Chestnut set a new record when he ate 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest 2007 event at Coney Island, breaking the previous record that he set on June 2, 2007 when he ate 59½ hot dogs in 12 minutes at a Nathan's qualifier event in Tempe, AZ.

Kobayashi, the six-time hot dog-eating world champion, arrived at the 2007 event with a jaw injury. He reportedly received therapy on the jaw until two hours before the contest and appeared to compete at 100 percent -- he ate 63 HDBs, eight more than his personal best.

Although the hype was almost completely centered around Chestnut and Kobayashi, there were other notables (15 men and 2 women) in the competition. And these competitors were certainly worth watching. These included:

  • A National Burrito Eating Champion
  • Some guy that had eaten 23 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes
  • "The Shredder" - The Baloney Eating Champion of the World
  • "The Mouth of the South" - The Pork 'n Beans Eating Champion
  • The Lumberjack Breakfast Eating Titleholder
  • A Shoo-fly Pie eating specialist
  • The Pigs Feet World Record Holder
  • Sonya Thomas - "The Black Widow" - Who has eaten 1/10th of her body weight in cheesecake
  • 63-year-old Richard LeFevre (My Favorite) "The Locust" - Who holds the world record for eating the most SPAM in competition.

I think I'd like to take Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas out for dessert and coffee.

The 12-minute competition was "dog-eat-dog" right down to the final swallow. The rules are simple: Eat the most HDBs in 12 minutes. No Reversal of Fortune (Barfing) is allowed. Read last year's column if you want the "chew-by-chew" play-by-play. It was a jaw-to-jaw dog fight.

This year, the competition has been shortened to 10 minutes. I'm sure there's a joke there. Anyway, don't call me 'til after the contest is over. Unless, of course, you wanna make a pizza run to B & C.
