SUNDAY, July 6, 2008 -- Rafa Nadal outlasted Roger Federer at Wimbledon in the most amazing tennis match I have ever witnessed. And I go back to Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, etc, etc.

McEnroe, who was in the broadcasting booth said it best. "We are just so lucky to have been here today to witness this level of tennis competition."

For me, these two young men are both gentlemen and role models for young men all over the planet. I was cheering for Federer. (We old guys gotta stick together.) but hats off to Nadal. See you in New York on Labor Day weekend.

SATURDAY, July 5, 2008 -- Venus whacked Serena. All of a sudden . . . I kinda like the Williams sisters. The Women's Final at Wimbledon was a glorious display of female athleticism. Venus is 28. Serena is 26. I hope they're around for another three years. They're great role models for young girls.

FRIDAY, July 4, 2008 -- Joey Chestnut out-gurgitated Takeru Kobayashi at Coney Island to win the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest . . . and I'm not making this up . . . IN OVERTIME.

Noon -- Friday July 4, 2008

"What the heck are you watching?" my wife, (Donna) asked.

"It's noon on the 4th of July," I answered, somewhat puzzled by her question. "What do you think I'd be watching?"

She wasn't listening or didn't hear. She was staring at the television in mesmerized disbelief.

"What the heck are THEY DOING?" she gasped. (She was pointing . . . her voice was a bit higher-pitched.)

I sighed in frustration and shook my head. How could she not know? It's noon on the 4th of July. I'm doing what every macho dude on the planet is doing.

I tried to get through to her one more time. "I'm watching Joey Chestnut defend his Hot Dog Eating Championship at Nathan's in Coney Island, New York.

Nathan who?

It's Joey Chestnut, Takeru Kobayashi, "The Shredder," "The Locust," and Sonya Thomas at Nathan's. Coney Island. Hot Dogs. You know . . . The Mustard Belt.

"What are they doing," she said, again, (a bit louder, a bit agitated) and seemingly confused by what her eyes were seeing?

She finally (thankfully) gave up and went outside to do yard work.

I know you watched it with me on Friday. But, in case you missed any details . . .

The 2008 Nathan's contest was shortened from 12 minutes to 10 minutes because someone did research and found out that the ORIGINAL Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest was a 10 minute affair.

Object of the Game: Eat as many hot dogs and buns as you can in 10 minutes without any "reversal of fortune (barfing).

Last year, Joey Chestnut (USA, USA, USA) beat Kobayashi something like 66-63.

At the 6-minute mark, my man, Joey had built a 30-26 lead but Kobayashi caught him (using the famous cannonball technique) at the 3-minute mark (45-45) and as time ran out . . . both eaters jammed the 59th hot dog & bun into their bulging cheeks -- forcing -- I know this is hard to swallow -- a sudden death "dog off".

In the five hot dog "eat-off," Chestnut would not be denied as he devoured his five dogs & buns while Kobayashi struggled. "We both wanted it," Chestnut said after the match. "But I NEEDED it more," Chestnut smiled.

USA, USA, USA.

I was never prouder.

I can't imagine a more FULL-FILLING 4th of July. Hope yours was good too. And best of all . . . No Yard Work!
