The Demon Loop is a popular ride at the Arenac County Fair.

If you don't like rides, you can always play darts, one of many games offered at the fair.

The annual Arenac County Fair began this week, on Tuesday July 15th, and lasts through July 19th. It takes place at the fairgrounds in Standish. On Tuesday, July 15th only, free admission to the fairgrounds was offered to everyone. Regular admission prices are as follows: It is $2 per adult per day, $1 for children between the ages of 6 to 18, and children 5 years of age or younger get in free. At 6 pm, the ticket and bracelet booth were opened up, the rides were turned on, and it wasn't long before children and adults alike were scurrying off to their favorite rides.

A wide variety of rides were offered this year: there were two types of ferris wheels, a tilt-a-whirl, the demon loop, bumper cars, etc. To get on these rides you can buy tickets, a bracelet, or a Mega Ride Pass, which allows you to ride any ride you want all week, for only $50.

Despite their obvious popularity, rides aren't the only entertainment the county fair is offering. The wide array of events include still exhibits, sheep judging contests, a free Sheriff's Department Bicycle Helmet Drawing, a horse show, games, Carla Wallenda--high pole act, and bearbottom MotoCross Racing!

The tilt-a-whirl is another favorite ride for fairgoers.

Games especially are drawing in the crowd. Not only do they offer all sorts of fun prizes, they are fun for children of any age, and a special form of entertainment for children too young or too scared to go on the rides. One game being offered is a ducky game, where a child draws a rubber ducky from a wading pool. The ducky has a number on the bottom of it, and the child wins the prize attached to that number. Another game, more suitable for older children, is throwing darts at balloons. The more balloons you break, the better your prize is. For one dart hitting a balloon, which is offered free as an incentive, you can win a smalled stuffed bear. For three darts, which cost about $5, you can win a slightly bigger stuffed animal, like a blue dolphin, for instance.

A game involving ducks is especially fun for young children.

Another popular option of this year's fair is that you can shop! Most people already know they can get both food and drink at the fair. But did you know you can buy yarn, packs of playing cards, purses, and other knick-knacks as well? You can! Near the demon loop ride, and near the darts game, there is a vendor selling all sorts of reasonably priced goodies. This makes a good place to go for those unable or unwilling to go on the rides or play the games. So no matter what your age, no matter what your interest is, there really is fun for everyone at the fair. And after all, why do people go to fairs? To have fun, of course!

If you don't want to ride the demon loop, or play darts, why not shop?
