Golfers Scramble for Charity

A team tries to figure out how to get the ball in the hole using the least number of shots possible.
The fourth annual Louis Socier Golf Scramble was held on Saturday, July 26 from 1 to 6 pm. Sponsored by the Louis Socier Charity Fund, the scramble took place at the Green Hills Golf Course in Pinconning. The cost to participate was $70 per golfer, or $280 per team. Pre-registration wasn't mandatory, however there were a limited number of spots available--allowing a maximum of 42 teams to participate in the scramble.
A golf scramble is typically made up of teams of 2 to 4 members. Each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is in the hole. For this event, each team was assigned a different hole to start at, so that it would be quicker, though all of the teams played the entire course.
Because of the large number of participants, teams who were registered late had to sit around the clubhouse and wait. Fortunately, they had many other options to pass time while waiting for their round of golf to begin. A luncheon buffet was available, serving pizza, fries, hot dogs, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Beverages were also provided, not only to those at the clubhouse, but to those on the course as well. Food and beer carts made many popular rounds to the golfers.
Golfers and spectators alike could also participate in raffles. There were two types of raffles, one offering small prizes and the other offering big prizes. Smaller prizes included a car care kit, a cooler, charcoal briquettes, and a wrench set, among other items. Raffle tickets for these prizes cost a dollar each or 6 tickets for $5. Bigger prizes included a rifle, a barbeque cart, and a 14 inch flat-screen T.V. Raffle tickets for the bigger prizes were $5 per ticket, 3 tickets for $10, or 8 tickets for $20.
The prices may seem a tad high, but it is all for a good cause--charity. Proceeds of this event will go to the Louis Socier Memorial Fund. The memorial fund, which helps provides college scholarships to high school students who are involved in sports, was set up to honor 20 year old Louis Socier, a great wrestler with Olympic aspirations. Socier's promising future was cut short when he died suddenly in 2005.
