Rapid Market Assessment
August 2, 2008 From 8am-2pm

On Saturday, August 2 from 8am-2pm, the Michigan Farmers Market Association and Michigan State University will conduct a Rapid Market Assessment at the Frankenmuth Farmers Market. This in-depth study provides a "snapshot" of the Market to analyze its impacts, success, and areas for improvement. Everyone is invited to attend and take part in the 60-second dot survey to share customer perspectives.

A Rapid Market Assessment (RMA) is the farmers market industry's chosen method for analyzing the health, impact, and success of a farmers market. Michigan's farmers market experts, students, and representatives from other markets will conduct the RMA, compiling data from customer counts, dot surveys (interview questions answered with a sticky dot on a poster), market observations, and customer feedback.

This provides an outside perspective of the market, helping it grow to benefit the entire region. The host market benefits from the perspective of "outside" team members who benefit themselves by taking home good ideas from the market they visit. Reports resulting from past Michigan RMAs are available on line at www.farmersmarkets.msu.edu in the "For Market Managers" section. Insights gained will be built into the Frankenmuth Market's business plan and used to identify ways to increase visitation, sales, and patronage of other Frankenmuth businesses.

The newly founded Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA) is offering RMAs to its members at special rates through close cooperation with Michigan State University. The value of an RMA more than pays for membership to MIFMA, whose members include markets, farmers, vendors, and "friends" (individuals, families, businesses, and organizations). Lucky markets receiving an RMA this year are Birmingham, Boyne City, Empire, Fenton, Frankenmuth, and Suttons Bay.

MIFMA's mission is to advance farmers markets to create a thriving marketplace for local food and farm products. MIFMA places farmers markets at the forefront of the local food movement and works to ensure all residents have access to healthy, locally grown food and that Michigan farmers markets receive policy support. Learn more about MIFMA at www.farmersmarkets.msu.edu.

The Frankenmuth Farmers Market is a "producer-priority" Market open 8am-2pm Saturdays, May 17-October 18 with a Christmas Market held Thanksgiving Weekend, November 28-30. The Market is located off Main St. near Cass St., across from the Chamber Platz, with parking available behind the Market.

Interested consumers are invited to join the Frankenmuth Farmers Market's email newsletter, "The 'Muth Mouth," by emailing dbronner@chartermi.net or signing up at the Market. Complimentary copies of the Market's 2008 Market Magazine are available at the Info Booth, along with Market Money gift certificates and t-shirts for purchase. Free live music, informational events, children's activities, and artists every Saturday make for an interactive Market as producers and consumers exchange fresh, local products while educating each other, inspiring community, and keeping our rural heritage alive. Please visit www.frankenmuthfarmersmarket.org for an event calendar and Market information.
