The crowds weren't quite as big as recent years, but the enthusiasm of those attending made up for it, said Lorri Norman, general chairman of the 38th Annual St. Anne Parish Festival in Linwood.
The round dome of the church, shaped much like that of the dome at Notre Dame University, towered over sun drenched crowds of festival goers on Saturday.
On a sultry Saturday afternoon, inside the big tent at the gate, bingo caller Vaughn Brunett, held up each ball and announced "B Five," "I Twenty-one," or "Thirty three," repeating the familiar phrase: "Are there any other bingos? Are there any other bingos? Are there any other bingos?"

One of mid-Michigan's longest running church festivals, the St. Anne's event each year draws old friends and new. At the entrance we spied Bernie Brunett, of Allegan, greeting pals from his days at the Chevrolet-Bay City plant.
Lynn Rivard and husband Mike, who's running for the Bay County Road Commission, were working with the duck pond and other kids' games in the cool garage that was the most popular place on the festival grounds.

Little Madison Bellottie, 5, was buying a sand bracelet from Katelynne Reed, 15, who was having a good time selling gimcracks to kids to benefit the church that is building a new parish hall.
Over on the ball diamond, Ray Hartwell of Cedar River Tool, was banging out a ground rule double in a blooper ball game against Shoe's Custom Embroidery.
Other teams in the competition were Beson's Corner Store, The Cheesehouse, CPS, Kawkawlin Party Store, Tom Pasak Distributors, Ricker's Green Hut, Simmon's, the Village Inn and XLT.

Music was blasting from the beer tent during the day by J&M Entertainment and at night by the Jerkwater Town Boys.
There were crowds enjoying the beer tent, food tent, kid's games, prize wheel, ice cream, baked goods, smear and euchre tournament, Texas hold'em tourney, gambling on the Big 6, blackjack and, of course, the traditional bingo.
BINGO!
On Sunday a polka mass presided over by Father Jerzy Dobosz with Jim Lepeak and the St. Anne Choir enlivened the morning and provided religious inspiration.

Fr. Dobosz also serves cluster parishes St. Valentine and Sacred Heart, Beaver, as part of Vicariate 12 of the Diocese of Saginaw.
"Grilled Chicken Dinner, noon--gone," states the advertising flyer. And that it was, "gone!"
Music from noon to 4 p.m. was by Jim Lepeak and, for latecomers and holdouts, Floyd Grocholski's Family Tradition topped off Sunday evening.
As the sun set and the moon rose over Saginaw Bay, twilight descended on another parish festival that mid-Michigan folks have come to know and love these past four decades.

There's still time yet this summer to attend one of the traditional outdoor events and see for yourselves, especially the Bay County Fair and Youth Exposition, Aug. 5-9; the Standish Area Chamber of Commerce Car and Bike Show, Aug. 9 and the National Pickle Festival in Linwood Aug. 15-17.
