The Shadow Sunday Radio Program (1937-49) Was Reality (To Me)
Spike TV's Joe Schmo - You just gotta love him!
Ahhhhhhh . . . The Good Old Days . . .
I remember riding back and forth to Saginaw (from Bay City) every Sunday on River Road in the late 1940's. I was never really interested in the ducks along the highway or the boats cruising up and down the river as dad drove us every weekend to see my mom's mom - Grandma Gronski.
I always watched the clock as the family's Plymouth cruised the highway along the Saginaw River. I knew what was coming. To a six year-old it was magical, even mystical. At 5:00 PM, every Sunday, The Shadow played on the radio. The deep, mysterious voice of the unseen announcer would ask -- "Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of Man??"
The Shadow Knows!
At 5:30 PM, it was time for Inner Sanctum. That squeaking (closing) door gave me nightmares every time I heard it slam shut.
It was Reality Radio . . . And it was wonderful.
Today, television production companies spew out new Reality shows like confetti thrown from the top floor of the Empire State Building during a World Series ticker-tape parade. That litter is pretty much lying all over the place. And there's a new model on the show room floor every Monday Morning.
And Why Not? -- It's got to be cheaper to make TV with amateurs than with million dollar an episode high profile stars like Jennifer Aniston, Jerry Seinfeld or Ray Romano. And with all those channels to fill, well heck, there's just so many times a person can watch M*A*S*H re-runs, Columbo and Murder She Wrote.

But on Tuesday night at 9:00 PM, you'll find me locked onto Spike TV (Cable Channel 39) to watch Joe Schmo
Here's The Original Concept: The Joe Schmo Show features a law-school dropout named Matt Gould who thinks he's competing for $100,000 on a "Big Brother"-style reality show called "Lap of Luxury," but is in fact the victim of an elaborate prank. All the other "contestants" (and the "host") are secretly paid actors, and they are all began the show conspiring to make Joe's time on the show miserable.
After four episodes, it's not only Raymond that everybody loves. Everybody Loves Matt. And the joke (ironically) is on the Joe Schmo Producers who have allowedMatt to become so loveable that even the paid actors are having trouble with the original show's concept.
Every time the show plots to create havoc in Matt's (Joe Schmo's) World, Matt somehow turns the tables and becomes a saint among sinners and leaves viewers (and actors) wanting to just hug him (Matt) like a soft cuddly bunny.
Stay Tuned! And don't call me on Tuesday night between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM. It's my quality time with Joe Schmo.
