The 32nd annual pickle festival was held this weekend at the Bi-Centennial Park in Linwood. A pickle pageant kicked the festivities off at Linwood Elementary School on Thursday, August 14, but the festival officially began on Friday, August 15 and ran through Sunday, August 17.
The pickle festival is definitely a family-oriented event, which draws in participation before it even begins. Businesses and individual adults come together, providing money, time, and energy to set things up. Children also have a hand in the festival. Each year children are asked to submit a logo design for the pickle festival. The winner gets his or her design printed on almost all things related to the pickle festival--like the program, the buttons, and other items. This year's winner was 10 year old Mavrick Obertein. His design was of a pickle wearing a cowboy hat, sitting on the edge of a dock, fishing. Buttons with this logo, as well as other merchandise, were for sale. The proceeds went towards park improvements.

Besides purchasing buttons and t-shirts, you could also buy an electronic yodeling pickle at the merchandise tent. Vendors who were separate from the festival were also there, selling a variety of items, such as jewelry and stuffed animals. And of course, another popular spot was the food area. For $6.00 you could buy a meal of barbecue ribs and "fixings", which included baked beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. Or if you were in the mood for something light, you could get cotton candy, a chili dog, nachos, popcorn, ice cream, or beverages, among other items, priced between $1 to $2.50.
The pickle festival wasn't just about food or selling things, it was mainly about having fun. For children there were a few inflatable objects on which they could race, climb, or bounce. There was also a parade on Saturday. For the entire weekend there was a Guitar Hero contest, where winners received trophies. Live entertainment was also provided. KT Country performed a wide range of music, from Elvis to Minnie Pearl. On Saturday night there was a wonderful fireworks display. But one of the most popular attractions was, as it always is, is the softball tournaments which lasted all weekend.
"There's always been a lot of nice support from the community for this festival, it is always something to look forward to because there is something to do for everyone. But one of the most popular events, which get the most support and which really gets people involved, are the ball games," said Dawn Labean, an enthusiastic volunteer working in the merchandise tent.
As the annual pickle festival came to a close, it was obviously a success. Especially if success is judged by the amount of people who attend the festival, because attendance this year was high. When asked to sum up the pickle festival in a few words, Labean described the festival as "exciting and lively". It certainly was both.
